It’s official. It’s meta.
Pile into the meta bandwagon!
Facebook formally announced today that it’s renaming itself Meta as it hopes to capitalize on all-encompassing computing in the metaverse. It will also change its stock ticker from FB to MVRS. It is using the domain name Meta.com, but that currently forwards to about.facebook.com/meta.
Domain name investors have been registering meta-related domains in droves over the past month or two, but that was well before leaks about a possible Facebook name change. It strikes me that it will be more difficult for Facebook to manage its brand by rebranding itself after a popular and generic term.
There’s also a question about if this is just a Google-style rebranding. Google rebranded as Alphabet but kept its core brands intact. Facebook, WhatsApp, or Instagram will remain iconic brands. So how important the term Meta is to its overarching brand strategy going forward will be something to watch.
Still, for domain investors registering meta-themed domains, this should add more fuel to the fire of the importance of the terms meta and metaverse going forward.
Take note of their “meta” motto—Connection is evolving and so are we.
They evolved so much that they went from an 8-letter domain to a 4-letter domain name. They are still on a .com even though they have enough money to start their own intranet.
Facebook taking the term meta and metaverse is like someone taking the term Internet and the net.. it’s a little bit ridiculous but also opens the door for a future rebrand of metaverse to alternative names like metanet, metaworld, metareality, metatv, metamedia etc.
Just read what Zuck had to say about its plans for a metaverse…. yikes, not only is it many many many years away, if it happens at all but I thought we were past this living in a virtual reality world rather than the real one. Its almost like a billionaire got a hard on for a sci fi idea and is running with it like the world wants it. Wouldn’t be shocked to hear he wants his head frozen one day too when he dies.
Or may just maybe I am getting old and grumpy and still refuse to watch a 10 episode series of a tv show on my phone.
A .META application is a definite possibility in the 2nd round of gTLD
Any light when did they acquire meta.com and under what conditions?
It’s an interesting back story. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative “acquired” a scientific research initiative called Meta that owned the domain. It’s still active on Meta.org, but it looks like it’s being sunsetted next year.
