Perpetrators posing as Australia’s domain name registry are requesting identification documents.
auDA, the organization that oversees Australia’s .au domain names, has issued a second warning this year about scammers targeting .au domain name owners.
The group says that someone is claiming to be from .au Domain Administration, requesting scanned copies of identification documents. It’s not clear what they are doing with these documents, but they could use them to open credit lines, perpetrate money laundering, and run other scams that involve ID verification.
auDA says it will only request this sort of information via registrars, not directly as the registry. .Au domain names come with restrictions that could lead to this sort of ID request.
The group urges anyone who fell for the scam to contact the Australian Cyber Security Centre.
“.Au domain names come with restrictions that could lead to this sort of ID request.”
Which are precisely the sort of policies on which these kinds of scams are based.
There’s your problem right there – Dumbasses with no peripheral vision who think “click on a link in this email” or “scan and send your ID” are good habits to develop among the user base in the first place.
You told your users they could receive ID requests. Users received ID requests and responded to them.
“auDA says it will only request this sort of information via registrars, not directly as the registry.”
And what percentage of users even knows the difference?
Stop pretending every wrinkle in this racket is clear to people who just want to use a domain name.
