There are many qualities of successful domain investors.
Last Friday, a guy who builds micro Saas businesses posted on twitter that “i’ve never met a really smart person who sells domains for a living”.
Looking through this person’s twitter feed, it seems that he spends much of his time trolling various types of people. And it works, with people like Rick Schwartz responding.
While I’m sure this guy is upset that a domain he wants is owned by someone else, I got to thinking: do you need to be smart to be a domain investor?
You don’t have to be smart to do a lot of stuff. When I think of the best domain investors, ‘smart’ isn’t the first adjective that comes to mind. I don’t think they’re not smart, it’s just that smarts is down the list of adjectives I’d use to describe them.
Instead, I think:
- Risk-taker
- Hacker (in the figures-stuff-out sort of way)
- Forward-thinking
- Hustles
- Good salesperson
This doesn’t describe all domain investors, but I think these skills are important for investing in domains or starting any sort of business.

that fool who owns f0m0 d0t c0m thinks thats he has a great domain… lmao what a jackass that is a $2,500 domain all day long not a penny more because people will stop saying it in a few years like chiiax of some other cheap fad. i think someone would get their ass kicked if they walked around in public with a fomo shirt on

building out an app and selling it for $2000 is what he does its cheap its jive its backwards but i guess thats what short stinky tank top wearing weasels do.

Nail on the head with those adjectives!

I thought a lot of domainers have their “Harvard degrees” ? Which in reality is a 6 week class that anyone can take as long as you fork over $80,000
Aren’t they smart ?
Domainer says
Mogreen, you are way off base.
I can think of 2 guys that went thru the Harvard degree program. However, both of them already had doctorate degrees before taking the course. And, they both made multi, multi millions in the domain biz before taking the course.
I can think of over 12 guys in the domain biz that have MBA’s from the top universities in the world.
I can think of 2 guys that are CPAs.
I can think of 4 guys that have masters in computer engineering.
One of the top rules in business, negotiations, politics and martial art. Never under estimate your opponent. You do it at your own peril.

I think anyone can hustle or speculate and buy or sell anything, but if you can make millions doing it that’s quite special and if you can escape from that and turn it into other businesses that takes something closer to genius. If you can then convince people to vote for you and become President of the Country that’s yet another level.

You need to be smart, stop clogging domaining.com feed with this nonsense.
Snoopy says
I think it mostly needs common sense. Plenty of intelligent people get caught up in far fetched ideas. Eg look at all the people who have bought .info, .us, new tlds, .tv over the years.
Doesn’t matter how smart the person is, they aren’t going to make much if they can’t make those basic common sense choices.
Ethan Taylor says
I think that statement is inaccurate.
There people who registered three or more words useless .com. They aren’t going to make much if they keep doing that.
And there are people who smartly registered one-word .info, .us, new tlds, .tv, … And they are making money.
So it’s not like TLDs determines everything.
Snoopy says
No body is making a profit on names like that, they’ll be gone from the industry or buying other tlds within 5 years regardless of their claims. The basics is getting the tld right, that bit should be common sense.
Unfortunately you do not speak from experience and you are in that exact group.
Ethan Taylor says
Of course TLD needs to be gotten right. But people who think only one TLD is right are biased, if you ask me.
And I don’t see .tv be gone within 5 years. Probably only you think so. There is no authoritative studies share your opinion, as far as I can see.
Snoopy says
The extensions don’t go away but the people who try to make money domaining in them do.
DN Brandy says
you are no Jeff Bezos who made the wise decision to purchase TWITCH.TV for One Billion Dollars. there is $ in .TV
Mark Thorpe says
Having common sense is key.
Have to be willing to go against the grain as well. Meaning not buying what other domainers are buying. Have a mind of your own.

Like attracts like.
I like domains

If it wasn’t for dumb domainers, i’d be a broke ass but stable genius.
