Domain name non-profit decides to party in Cancun for two Spring Breaks in a row.
ICANN has named the locations of two more of its meetings taking place in 2021.
Apparently getting a two-for-one deal, the domain name overseer has booked another Spring Break in Cancun, Mexico. It’s already going to Cancun for its March 2020 meeting. Now it will return March 20-25, 2021 for ICANN 70.
The organization also selected The Hague, Netherlands for ICANN 71. That will take place June 17-17, 2021.
It previously announced that the annual general meeting (ICANN72) will be in Seattle in October 2021.

From my understanding, Cancun isn’t what it used to be. Crime is on the increase, and ICANN is better off booking Cartagena, Colombia.

Beaches, resorts, food, service, cultural places and nightlife remains the same… what have changed are narcos killing each other, but that usually happens in bad neighborhoods pretty far away from where the tourists are having the time of their life… the same thing as New York, Chicago, Orlando, Miami, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, etc… would you stop going to any of these cities because some extremists and gang members are killing each other? No, right? …. Tourists are completely safe in Cancun and the Riviera Maya… at least mass shootings where innocent people get killed aren’t an issue in Mexico.

Four miles from the resorts isn’t “far away” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/feb/17/cancun-shooting-five-people-gunned-down-in-mexicos-tourist-hotspot
The homicide rate per capita in Mexico makes the US pale in comparison:
https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/22/americas/mexico-murders-2017/index.html
And https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/06/upshot/us-murder-rate-for-2018-is-on-track-for-a-big-drop.html
Yes, Mexico is still full of great people and amazing food so hopefully the ICANN event is funtastic.

I’m pretty sure the person who wrote TheGuardian.com article, doesn’t know or haven’t been in Cancun… Do you know Cancun? Have you been o living here? It seems you just follow the media like a sheep… I live here and follow the reality… Take a look where the bar La Kuka is located https://goo.gl/maps/FfwQaRn4MdUwa6qG6 it is in a bad neighborhood (also check the outside on Google Streets), it’s far away from The Hotels Zone, no tourists go to that area, no tourist are taken even near of that area… that’s a pretty bad men’s club for locals with no money and gang people, it has nothing to do with the touristic places. If you feel safe by going to Chicago, LA, Miami, NYC, Las Vegas, you will safe by coming to the Riviera Maya, MX, at least here you won’t be randomly killed by a depressed or resentful shooter who just wants to see blood.
Homicide rate has increased, yes, but again, all the killed people are the bad apples aka drug dealers, at the end, it’s a good thing for everyone… I’m an expat, 3 years already living in the Riviera Maya, every weekend my wife and I go out to any of the over 50 beaches, islands and tourist spots and have never felt unsafe, despite the bad news, we aren’t returning back, this is like living in paradise despite all the 3rd world issues, people are amazing… most Americans who come here get laugh about the sensationalist stupid media, and most of them return several times for vacation.
Insecurity in the Mexico has nothing to do with normal or regular people or tourists, it’s a problem among drug dealers, government and police.
Stop consuming drugs in the US and stop building and exporting weapons abroad and the entire planet probably someday will be in peace. Also, do something to change the racist 3rd-grade monkey you have in the WH.

Wow Cancun during peak season? Must be pretty pricey to hold an event there at that time. Who pays for that?

Good for ICANN , it has come to the realization that it is a travel club for beautiful locations and vacations and has gone all in.
Why force Board members and staff to stay somewhere bad, when they can be at Secrets Cancun

I can’t wait to hear the reviews on TripAdvisor from ICANN. They have such high standards and experience when it comes to foreign travel, their reviews are so practical! Esp on the two-for-one deals in places like Cancun.

I’m not a fan of Cancun because it’s filled with lots of boozy gringos. I’d prefer Cartagena, Medellin, Rio, Veracruz, Guadalajara. Same with Tulum. Used to be a wonderful locale. Now it’s filled with New Agey gringos who speak almost no English, except “tequila, cerveza, hola, gracias.” In fact, you hear more “Namaste” there than you do “hola”

ICANN should reserve the “.cancun” ntld and create their own “icann.cancun” second level domain as a GoFundMe page for their non-profit organization. Oh, wait… They already have one: https://newgtlds.icann.org/en/applicants/agb
