Expired domains are coming as first anniversary nears.
In terms of domain name registration volume, .App has been a big success for Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL). The company’s .app top level domain name has nearly 400,000 domains in the zone after 11 months of general availability.
The one year anniversary of general availability is May 8, and that means the inevitable “junk drop” is coming.
The term refers to all the speculative (and sometimes defensive) domain name registrations that registrants drop one year after a top level domain launches. With so many domains coming up for renewal on the anniversary, domains under management inevitably drops.
It will be over a month after the anniversary before we get a clear picture of renewals and drops because of the grace period.
There doesn’t seem to be much of an aftermarket for .app domain names despite high registration volumes. Namebio shows a total of 15 public sales. I received multiple offers for Voicemail.app but none resulted in a sale.

How much were you asking, how much did you pay, and are you renewing it ?
Andrew Allemann says
I got it in early access for $125. Ironically, just received an offer on the same day you commented. I was asking $3,500; they felt it was worth less than $1,000. I just renewed it, along with my two other .app domains. They are only about $15 to renew, so I figured I’ll give it another year.

I registered four defensive .app domains and will likely drop all four.

We’re in an app economy – “there’s a .app for that.”
Jay says
I somehow sold foodtruck.app last June for 4k…I have surgeon, surgery and carpet.app and nothing thus far…I’ve renewed at very steep discount already (about $58 per domain), but I’m surprised surgeon hasn’t gotten a hit at all.. rn, dispatch, dentist and doctor all sold for decent tags…we’ll see
Michel says
RN did NOT sell.
Jerry Cai says
Jay, may I ask which registrar do you renew those .app domains with a deep discount? Thanks
Sal Vance says
I think Google domains is the lowest price. You can transfer surgeon.app for $80 CAD
Jose says
It was all a hoax, google bought .app to protect its application market. No advantage over other domains has. He did it in order to protect his playstore. To protect your monopoly of applications against the competition.
Jeremy HM Chou says
My OTC.App was acquired by Hashnest.com this May, subsidiary company of Bitmain.
Michel says
For how uch may I ask?
Jeremy HM Chou says
Over 6 figures worth of CNY paid in BTC, exact sold price is requested not to be disclosed publicly.
Accudomain says
Yeah a lot of a.pp domains have been dropped off due to its expensive renewal fee. Some good Premium keywords keep their high prices as usual! I’m holding couple of .app domains waiting for the right offer. I will keep you updated.
