NNN.com, Wok.com among domains man claims were stolen.
A Japanese man alleges that valuable domain names were stolen from his registrar account and transferred to another registrar. These aren’t run-of-the-mill three-letter domains, either. Among the domains he says are stolen include nnn.com and wok.com.
Yoshiki Okada filed (pdf) the in rem action in U.S. Federal District Court in Virginia where the .com registry Verisign is located. Okada claims that eol.com, fde.com, jol.com, nnn.com, olp.com, tang.com, wok.com, wtv.com, and zhang.com were stolen from him.
It’s unlikely that the alleged thief will show up to represent himself in Virginia. In most cases, the judge in this type of lawsuit will accept a default judgment and order Verisign to transfer the domains. The exception is when a stolen domain has been re-sold, in which case the buyer might try to defend the domain name.
Common denominator in domain name thefts. Godaddy. So many people that buy on Perfectname.com are in a big rush to move the domain name to Godaddy. Crazy!
eNom in this case.
I see the thief was in a hurry to move to Godaddy.
the domains were stolen from eNom and eNom did nothing to help the legitimate registrant return his domains?
Because I’m in the middle of similar scenario and was hoping eNom does help to return domains
These names are now at multiple registrars. Who knows if they have been sold on to other people.
as ballpark figure, how much would it cost for filing such cases against registries? and aren’t the losing registrar(s) involved in such thefts?
To be clear, the lawsuit isn’t against the registry. It’s against the domains. If no one shows up, you can file these cases for anywhere from a few grand to twenty grand depending on the lawyer and complexity.
YoshikiOkada.com probably remains in the registrar account. Kind of the them to leave him his name.
With Japan (145,000 square miles) being smaller than California (163,000 square miles), how many Yoshiki Okada’s could there possibly be…
About time they filed the lawsuit, it’s almost 3 years ago that the domains were stolen: https://domaingang.com/domain-crime/domain-crime-eol-com-nnn-com-zhang-com-tang-com-wok-com-jol-com-wtv-com-are-currently-stolen/
This will be mighty interesting to see play out. From the very start there was a chance to recover them all. Considering time and several rar’s now if resold or not (thief can always claim they bought it from “someone”). It is complex and honestly Id be shocked if he recovered them all.
