Company files three applications for what will likely be popular new TLD choice in next round.
Here we go again.
A company has filed several trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in an effort to trademark the term “.coin” as a top level domain name.
.coin TLD, led by Meir Bank, filed three applications on May 16. Two are for .coin and one is for .coin TLD. Two have descriptions of “Brand development and evaluation services in the field of domain names” and the other for “Domain registry operator services”.
They also are filed as 1A applications, not intent-to-use. The applications attach this page as a specimen.
If ICANN were to hold a new top level domain name application round today, I have no doubt that .coin would attract many applicants.
But the USPTO does not issue trademarks for top level domains, and in the last round, ICANN dismissed these attempts at new TLD frontrunning.

It will be interesting to follow. It seems that the first “experts” to consult for this project were legal ones.
John Berryhill says
There’s no evidence of any “expertise” in these applications.

But a lot was learnt from the first round. Any “new gTLD specialist”, familiar with what happened in round one when a project had been revealed too long in advance, knows how confidentiality is important. I wouldn’t be surprise to see more .COIN applicants taking advantage of this trademark publication.

Confusingly similar to already existing Indian cctld .CO.IN
Rob S. says
And it’s a “deleware[sic] registered company”?
Mark Thorpe says
There may be a .Coin domain extension someday, but it won’t be owned and operated by this person/company.
John says
Dot coin is already a bit passe. Dot crypto is a bit longer but may be more broadly appealing and clear in meaning.
Note, fourth try to get this posted, changed format.
John says
Despite any hype, it’s the same old song and dance as for most of the new TLDs. There are just not that many keywords that go well with *coin. Or *crypto. Frankly, they both really kind of suck to be honest. So we know what’s going to probably happen. Coin will probably come at a pretty high reg fee. And make no mistake – I’m a blockchanin, Bitcoin and crypto supporter. Just being honest about such prospective TLDs.

It’s one thing to attempt to trademark the top-level domain names that have already been announced. Clearly, that makes the name generic. It’s completely different when you first get a trademark that is subsequently chosen by ICAAN as a top-level domain. Imagine, ICAAN choosing to make .apple available to the public. The problem with these applications is that they are so easy to invalidate based on providing fraudulent information to USPTO. A “Delaware registered company formed specifically for the implementation of Domain registry operator services for the .coin Top Level Domain (TLD).” Really?
