Google’s .App domain name pops in first day of general availability.
Over 100,000 .app domain names have been registered after less than a day in general availability.
Google Tech Lead Ben McIlwain disclosed the number during a talk at Google I/O this afternoon.
30,000 domain names, ostensibly pre-registrations, were registered within the first three minutes of general availability.
17,000 domain names were registered during the early access period over the past week.
These are stunning numbers for a new top level domain name and could give all new top level domain names some much-needed exposure.

Why is this any surprise? Big internet co’s including Google are spending billions on app platforms and refining the ecosystem. This is easily one of the most functional tlds ever released to date. Every product and IoT device will be tied to apps. Apps are our modern day tools and this tld clearly distinguishes them – both technically and marketing wise. Me thinks Google knows something we don’t…
Jane Doe says
But you don’t need a .APP domain to run an app.

You don’t need a domain to run a website
Acro says
Unless you have an actual software app (application) the matching .app domain is pointless. Reselling value is very, very low. Sure, many will treat .app domains as generic, .XYZ style, perhaps if they get a keyword that’s already taken in .com (for sure) or in other TLDs/gTLDs. “Gold rush” frenzy is the best way to waste money, as with most gTLDs of course.

“Software app (application)”. This is 2018. You might want to spend more time in today’s web development communities and less in domainer forums. It will immensely enhance your long-term domain name considerations.

Only in comparison to the rest of the flea bitten ntld market.
I doubt Google would have expected numbers to be that low when they paid $25million 3 years ago. They have no hope of making a profit from it.
keenobserver says
You think Google is running .app to make a profit on domain registrations?
Octavian Do says
They will run a profit. Once it comes to full fruition, they will be earning at least $10-15M /year … So a 2-3 year return on investment and regular income after that. Not considering they sat on it for 3 to 4 years. Google will make money, not a question. Not that it’s their primary income. But who can’t use an extra few million a year?
Snoopy says
By the way. I have now looked at quite a few articles at what is happening at Google I/O and none of the articles even mentioned .APP, so I do not think this is a very high on Google’s priority list.

Really?

Safe and secure web development is absolutely on the priority list of Google… In multiple sessions they mentioned extensions and the relation to new application tools. The word ‘app’ was redefined today. Yesterday’s app is much different than todays app. Technology always evolves, protocols adapt and/or change….The idea of downloading an entire app on your device and sucking all the CPU processing, power and memory is becoming ancient. Apps are now running on the largest operating system, the internet. Interaction is faster and more secure…Before one understands the potential of .app, one must understand tomorrow’s app and not yesterdays app.

Seem that way as the selling point seems to be SSL. This sounds like another Google marketing fail as why would anyone care about that?
Good luck with your domains.
Bul says
You said it. I won’t add a word.
Ralph says
Majority of the .app crap that is being registered is parked on parking pages, or not even registered on .com.
The people registering these domains are absolutely clueless, the ones spending $500-$2000 per year on premium renewals are going to go bust within 1-2 years as nobody wants to touch those renewals.

True
David Yang says
Google will make .app domains more valuable.
Mark Thorpe says
If Uniregistry owned the .App extension, some domainers wouldn’t be pumping it instead of dumping on it.

Would*
Aaron Strong says
Update by Ben from Google..Now over 150,000 registered just 24 hours after GA.
Steve says
Will a list of registered and sales prices of the .app names become available soon? I realize hundreds if not thousands of app domains are in auctions at this time.
For example, what did persons pay for:
Crypto.app
Wallet.app
Money.app
Casino.app
etc
Funtooza says
From where I can download list of all app registered domains?
