Domain is headed for biggest new TLD launch yet.
I might sound like a broken record here, but .app continues to outperform essentially all new top level domain name launches to date.
Although it’s not reflected in the zone file, Google’s Ben McIlwain reports that over 7,500 domain names were registered during day five of the early access phase.
That puts all other new TLDs to shame.
I continue to get cancellation notices on pre-orders I placed since the domains are no longer available.
This morning, GoDaddy VP Paul Nicks confirmed to DNW that .App is its biggest new top level domain launch to date in terms of pre-orders at the registrar. Every day of early access has beaten the same day of other new TLD early access periods, and it has more pre-orders than any other domain.
Prior to .App, .Guru was the largest (it was first) and .VIP was second in terms of volume at GoDAddy.
Given these results, you might want to adjust your strategy if you have a pre-order domain. Remember, if more than one person has pre-ordered a domain at GoDaddy then you’ll wind up in an auction. It might be worth paying the day 7 EAP price today rather than risk an auction.
Is it just me or are people registering .app just because of google? I mean, its kind of a niche gtld meant for apps.
Some will register because of Google (and why not? Having an internet giant behind your domain has to be a good thing) but many also “get it”. The web is involving into Progressive Web Apps, where your typical “website” is evolving into applications. Slick, clean, streamlined, optimised, secure, instant load, browser push notifications. Hardly niche.
so very website is going to be an app? then why even call it an app if every site is going to use this. many don’t get it, in my opinion they are just playing follow the leader.
No but I imagine that most of the commercial ones will, in time. As a dev, I’m primarily PC based but can’t ignore the explosion of mobile users and convenience of hand-held devices, driven by applications. Why call it an app? Because they’re applications! Those applications still require URLs to load content. Perhaps many don’t get it, or they do (combinations of investors/end-users) which is why .App is achieving record numbers. .App is very generic, whereas many other nTLDs are niche having their own vertical market and customer base. No doubt they’ll be new information about the direction of apps in the forthcoming Google I/O 2018 Conference on Tuesday and interesting to see how registrations, adoption develops and whether Google inject overall awareness in there’s more to the net than dotcom.
App’s require URLs?
They don’t need .APP for that to occur (as proven by the fact that they don’t currently need a .APP to do so)
The security aspect is also irrelevant.
Unless .APP provides a promotional advantage by way of search (which Google may well do, though as the owner, there are issues of claims regarding favouring their own extensions over others.
Without promotional advantage, the extension is .MOBI
To add to Derricks spot on comment.Google is already developing protocols that makes the .app extension more secure for Progressive Web Apps. That is why .app is seen differently than other extensions such as .com…They will continue to add protocols to use the internet as an operating system, safely and securely, with a .app extension…If an extension is to challenge .com (and we don’t know that) this is the one.
Well, it seems to me if you use the domain for anything other than an…its kind of silly. you can do whatever on a .com. apps on .apps…
from what i’ve read about pws, its just making websites look and act like apps. they are still not apps technically.
The domain’s success certainly has something to do with Google. However, Google has released other domains that have been duds. So it’s a combo of the name and Google in my mind.
How do you switch at Godaddy and pay to avoid the auction ?
Just buy it on EAP today. Your pre-order will then be canceled because the name is no longer available.
It will still go to auction in EAP if there are more than 1 application for the same name in the EAP day.
Here is what it states under the “pricing details”
This period gives you early access to sought after domains. Anyone may purchase a domain during this phase which will include an Early Access fee that is fully refundable if you are not awarded the domain name. Multiple applications for the same domain registered during each priority pre-registration phase will go to auction.
Your registration fee for this domain is $173.99. After the initial registration, this domain will renew at $23.99/yr.
I suggest going to 101domain.com here:
https://www.101domain.com/app.htm
They do not do an auction.
You are correct that assuming there are two+ entries for the same day. But at this point for EAP you’d just be buying it, not pre-ordering.
Yep, it happened to me. It showed Finance and Fina ncial.app available. The following day I received an email claiming the names were no lo get available ??????? Go figure!
It also doesn’t hurt that Google hasn’t held back many (any?) popular words, phrases, numbers, etc from being available to be registered. If other extensions had released the same way they may have had higher numbers too. Google’s release of .app hasn’t been perfect, but it does have some good points if you are interested in the extension. Whether it becomes popular will be up for debate now until we know one way or the other.
yes, i must commend them for that. its one of the things i’ve always complained about regarding new gtlds.
curious. I own at least 5 _____app.com domains that sold for between 2500 and 2000 with 2000 annual renewals. for just the ___.app
Will this have any effect on the valuation of my ____app.com domains (up, down, same)
I realize it’s more subjective, than precise metrics.
Thank you
If anyone is interested to have a look at those websites that have already started using the .app domain, search “site:*.app” (without quotes) on Google.
