Oar.com is headline monthly GreatDomains auction so far.
The domain name Oar.com will sell in this month’s GreatDomains auction over at Sedo.
Oar.com has met its reserve and is currently at $35,000 with three bids. It’s not a domain that the Chinese will love because of the vowels, but it’s rare to have a three-letter word domain available. I think it will make a great brand for some company. The only drawback is that people might hear it as “Or.com”.
Speaking of three-letter words, Can.com still sits below its six-figure reserve price.
The only other domains in the auction to meet their reserves so far are Kelikopter.de (€3,600) and CCSM.com ($900).
The auction concludes on Thursday.

This sale will help dictate where the .com market is. Right now, $35k is way way too low compared to past years. I expect it to triple by the end of the auction, if not quintuple. If it doesn’t, we may be looking at a lull or downward slip.

I disagree about oar.com reflecting the overall .com market, and also that it “should” sell for higher. According to namebio it sold for $28,500 on Flippa/MediaOptions in 2014. In a quick search of my email, I see oar.com has been pitched to me 21 times since 2013 by at least 8 different brokers/brokerage houses. Way over-marketed to the domainer crowd.

Steven,
Also, according to NameBio, Oar.com sold for $69k on Flippa about a year and a half before the $28,500 MediaOptions/Flippa sale.
It appears the $28,500 sale was negotiated, after the auction didn’t meet reserve. This is only an assumption based off the “sold by negotiation” description, and the last seller comment that says, “Next bid hits reserve…”
When MediaOptions/Flippa sold for (according to NameBio) $40,500 less, it was marketed in the sellers comments as “…one of the top 5 domains ever sold on Flippa!” and the flippa seller quoted the previous $69k sales price several times in the comments to IMHO help hype the sale.

With 17 hours left, there are only three bids. $19,000 > $20,000 > $35,000

Oar.com, while short and only one syllable, fails the radio test (is it “ore” or “or” or…?) and is a rather blah and old-fashioned word. Congrats to seller for hitting the reserve price since even that was not a foregone conclusion with this auction.

But, it doesn’t need to if referencing the band O.A.R.
