I can’t decide if this domain is ingenious or dumb.
I was in the car listening to the radio yesterday when a commercial caught my attention.
The ad was for a site that aggregates vacation rental sites like HomeAway. I rent a vacation home about 4-5 times a year, so I was instantly interested.
Then the ad mentioned the site’s name: Tripping.com.
Did I hear that correctly? Did they name the site using a term commonly associated with drugs?
They said the word Tripping.com several times. But then they went a step further:
“That’s t-r-i-p-p-i-n-g dot com”, the announcer said.
Without that confirmation, I’m not sure if I would have believed that the site name was tripping.com. I assume people don’t hear it correctly or do no believe it’s actually tripping.com, which is why they included the spelling in the ad.
In general, any domain that has to be spelled out to understand it is a bad domain. It fails the radio test.
But the name for this site is so startling that it might just be a great domain. What do you think?

Excellent domain. I don’t think it’s necessary to spell it. It passes the radio test for me.

Great Domain! Female founder (Jen O’neal) and former marketing director, so I think she knew what she was doing.

The edgy wordplay made you do a double take, and even inspired you to tell others about their brand. You’re not likely to forget it soon either.
It’s a brilliant name.

You’re talking about it…so yes, great domain!
Robert Hawkes says
I think it is probably clever, with a direct (as in take a trip) meaning suited to their business, and the alternative meaning that you mention that will make it catchy and people talk about it. I personally would probably not use it in my business, but depending on the nature of the business I can see it a good choice. Thanks for telling us about it.
