Base barely budges but beats Verisign’s expecations.
Verisign (VRSN), the registry for .com and .net domain names, released results after the closing bell today.
The base of registered domains in .com and .net barely budged, increasing 0.68 million during the quarter. But this is above Verisign’s forecast of 0.0 to 0.4 million growth. It predicted slow growth because of a lot of domain names registered by Chinese domain investors a year ago that it thought would not be renewed.
Verisign also beat last quarter’s forecast of domain base growth, so the company seems to be conservative with its estimates.
There were 9.2 million new .com/.net registrations during the quarter.
Wow.. .com is still growing (very slow growth though) while nTLD’s lost almost 5 million registrations within the last 6 month.
Large chunk of the new GTLD loss can be placed on .xyz’s renewals coming up though
