Collection is one of the best geo-domain portfolios in the world.
The domain name portfolio amassed by domain investor and entrepreneur Skip Hoagland has been put up for sale as a package.
The portfolio includes some of the best geographic domain names available in a single portfolio, including Atlanta.com, Cuba.com, Honolulu.com, Baltimore.com, Geneva.com and Portland.com.
Hoagland told Domain Name Wire that he is ready to retire, which is why his family, which now owns the company he built, is now offering the portfolio in its entirety. He’s had it valued at about $30 million. They are looking for offers around $20 million and will consider anything that brings $15 million+ net to the familh.
Unlike a number of portfolios that have changed hands recently, this one is small in number but very high on quality. In addition to geo domains, the portfolio includes Fishing.com, FlyFishing.com and Shooting.com. The complete portfolio is here.
The package does not include domain names currently owned with partners, although they can be sold on a case-by-case basis. The owners will also continue to consider offers on individual domain names but at higher relative prices.
Anyone with a serious offer should email skip (at) hoagland.com.
Out of the list, the most i like is Cali.com! Others are way overprices but surprisingly this one is underpriced!
Best of luck my friend and hope you have a great retirement!
Correction: Not way overpriced, just “overpriced” imo.
Best of luck again and an amazing portfolio!
Some truly spectacular domains.
My favorite is Fishing.com
The Geo-domains are amazing,
Mighty handsome portfolio.
What an insane steal for this portfolio. Will any of the big dogs step up for $15 million?
Wow, those are incredible domains. I really want Baltimore and Honolulu!
Definitely quality over quantity. 🙂
Do you now how he acquired these Andrew?
Some of the domains were acquired as part of this deal: http://www.dnjournal.com/archive/lowdown/2010/dailyposts/20100920.htm
I’m embarrassed to admit I never heard of this guy or his collection until now and it’s not something I would ever admit publicly. 😐
Some really great domains there.
I especially like this one:
“chamberofcommerce.com–currently producing 800k in gross revenue”
That one reminds me of the needless perversion of the industry and the market despite such blatant realities discussed here and elsewhere: http://www.domaininvesting.com/how-i-would-start-over-with-10000/#comments
Cuba produces 5% of the world cobalt which makes up 35% of Electric Vehicles, cellphones and power tools batteries. Will cuba eventually become 100% EV powered transportation within next 10 years? After Cuba.com, CubaEV.com is my pick!
Other than Godaddy, I don’t know who would buy up the whole portfolio.
It doesn’t really fit in GoDaddy’s model.
An absolutely superb collection of high quality names. Skip should be in contact with major media companies because no one, save Boulevards, has a geo-portfolio like this.
What a fantastic geo portfolio. Has a U.S. city or state ever gone after their exact match .com like Euro cities?
by “gone after” are you referring to UDRP stuff? Not that I’m aware of. That seems to be a European phenomenon.
Yes referring to UDRP or any legal action. Would be surprised if US cities or states tried to go after their .com.
But then I think of the law in the US that allows govt, not sure if Fed or State, to take private land (via compensation) if it is interfering with, or preventing the expansion of gov land. Like building a railroad.
Domains are not considered assets so little chance US gov could usurp a geo.com. But if they are categorized as an intellectual property asset in the future then who knows what some of these local govts might try to do in 10-15 years.
Was the PDF list transcribed or scanned or something? There are 23 available for hand regs…
I miss the days when Geos were more hot. I sold skip a few names back then and used the money to trade up.
Killer names here. Underpriced I think.
Happy retirement Skip
While we at the subject of premium geo domains, does anyone know that geo domain Macau.com was sold for around three millions last year? Monte Cahn was the broker.
A lot of the big newspapers purchased the geo-domains — Boston, Miami, etc — but revenues in the newspaper industries have plummeted. The big brands still do well as they have a loyal following/readership.
Still, these are super geo-domains— if Amazon goes into the travel biz — maybe it will go after them —
Really glad to see geo domain names like ParkCity.com going for $400K.
I own several .GUIDE domains like Park City, Aspen, Vail, Whistler, etc.
Skip’s portfolio validates that even at 5-10% of the value of the .COM the premium destination .GUIDE domains like http://www.LakeTahoe.guide are solid investments.
“How much is a domain name worth?
Realistically a domain name can be worth any amount but most domain names sell for around $5,000 to $20,000 – premium domains, category killers and short domains however can easily command $100,000 or millions depending on a wide number of reasons. But let’s not talk about the value of individual domains per se but how a domain name compares to the cost and value of traditional media. Let’s put a $10,000 domain in perspective to traditional media.
Billboard Advertising
Billboard Advertising is some of the most expensive advertising around. In New York City, for example, a rotary bulletin can cost you anywhere from $35,000 to over $600,000 a WEEK according to Clear Channel’s online rate card.
Mobile Advertising
You know that advertising billboard which is essentially carried around on the back of a truck and drives around all day? $20,000 a month if you want to advertise in the Atlanta Market (although fuel cost is included)
Radio Advertising
Even radio ads can cost around $200 average per spot and you need at least a handful a day to make any dent in attracting business… total monthly estimated cost $30,000 or more.
Now the question is what do you own after the 30 day period for the traditional media sources above?
Nothing.
If you spend $10,000 on a domain name your only future expenses are the $8 a year in registration fees – not even $8 a month … actually less than $1 a month.
Of course there are other expenses such as building a website and SEO but all of these expenses are costs which go directly to building value to something you own – not airtime or billboard space you are leasing!
There are also intangible factors like authority which domain names have that traditional media can never compare to. Imagine owning a domain like govote.com or compareautoinsurance.com – Domains like these are intuitive by description and define your role as an authority on the subject and domains like this are commonly available instead of spending millions of dollars on the super premiums like vote.com or autoinsurance.com
Many domains can command $1,000,000 or more even in a fire sale however the amount of great domains still available at cost well below annual traditional media cost for only a SINGLE portion of your overall marketing plan is practically unlimited.
The real question is not how much a domain name costs but how much value the right domain name can bring to your business.”
15 yr financing for all my names, consider lease to own and managing partners. I want to help talented people/ end users be successful and my offer to be the bank will help. Few have cash toddy or can go to a bank. If all brokers and owners did this, it would generate more success for everyone and the industry. Thanks best of luck to everyone. I turned 70 and just ran out of time and got tired of 16 hr work days. Thanks very much to all those who were part of my great ride..
Enjoy your retirement old friend ! Been about 35 years since I’ve seen you & obviously you’ve been working quite hard. I hope that you get all the R & R that you deserve! ….an old friend from North Georgia
