An email-by-email look at this common scam.
By now you are probably familiar with the trademark domain name scam. A company sends an email informing you that someone is trying to register domain names containing your trademark (or matching your existing domain). The scammer’s goal is to get you to pay them to register the domain names.
It’s one of the oldest domain name scams in the books. And it works. That’s why it continues to this day.
I recently received another one of these scam emails. I played along rather than delete it so that I could share the entirety here.
Email 1:
from Jerry Chan
Dear Sir or Madam,
This is a letter regarding the authorization of domain and brand names of your company, please take it seriously. We are a Chinese registrar for domain and brand names. The registration request has been received by our company from SIQL Global Ltd applying to register brainstormlabs as their brand name and some top-level domain names(.CN .HK etc). We found the main body of those names is the same as yours after our initial checking.
We are handling the request and needing to confirm whether or not your company authorizes the 3rd party company to register them ASAP. Please let me know your opinions so as to solve it promptly. Looking forward to your reply.
Best Regards,
Jerry Chan

At present, we haven’t passed their application because we need your opinion. If your company considers these names are of importance to your business or interest, I suggest that your company registers these names in prior so as to avoid confusion or speculation. Of course, If you don’t think their application would affect your company in the future, then my suggestion is that you can give up these names and let us finish the registration for them as our duty performs. Please give me your company’s decision as soon as possible in order to let us handle this issue properly.
Best Regards,
Jerry Chan

Yes, it is a common scam! We receive these kind of emails all the time.
Thank you for making people aware of this fraud.
See if you can rope them into registering the domain names but… gosh… you keep having trouble with your payment information.
what, and once they’ve registered the domains you never wanted, raise a trademark case against them? 😉
Interesting that they only offer check boxes for 5, 10 and 20 years.
I’m curious out of how many people/companies go for it. Multiple levels of naivety. But if they hook one who checks all the boxes (every TLD and let’s say 5 years) I guess that brings in an extra $1,000?
God love the opportunist! I get these all the time lol. A chancer (and fool) is born every minute!
Thank you very much! Scams in domain industry appear everyday.
Everyday in my spam folder I receive “warnings”, “alerts”, everything!
Be aware folks, scammers nowdays are very very shady.
“Jerry” just followed up with me to urge me to submit the forms:
“Dear Andrew,
I shall remind you this case is very urgent, please handle it as soon as possible. Have you filled in the application form and returned it? Please let me know. Thank you.
Best Regards,
Jerry Chan”
Hi Kim,
I acquired the .com and .co.uk version of this for a product range I am launching in October.
I would be happy to relinquish bedazl.com for the right price. Undoubtedly this would be stronger for your clients than the .HK or .CN

‘Jerry Chan’ kept popping up in my inbox. I’m always suspicious about these types of email however in the back of the mind there is always that ‘what if?’! The latest approach to wowwoo.co.uk was a particular worry so did a search and found this really useful review / warning. Set my mind at rest –
appreciated. Thank you.
OK – so that was close. I was nearly done. It just seemed so realistic. Here is a copy/paste of the email I was originally sent:

I had someone try to run this scam on me shortly after I registered my domain, so it probably would have happened ~2003 – 2007. I couldn’t afford to buy the Chinese version of my domain name and didn’t see any value in it. I figured if someone wanted to buy gottahavacuppamocha.cn, more power to them 😉
Even i received the same FRAUD Mail!! for my website : http://www.seolizards.in

Yup just got one today. Strange they must be able to gain access to alibaba as they’ve used a potential manufacturer’s name on the email.
Thanks for writing this post as you’ve saved us the potential stress/ distress of responding to them. I was really annoyed thinking our manufacturer wanted to scam us as we’re a registered trademark.

I got this scam today, good thing I Googled it first. The email I got:
(If you are NOT CEO, please kindly forward this to your CEO, because this is urgent. If you believe this has been sent to you in error, please ignore it. Thanks)
Dear CEO,
This email is from China domain name registration center, which mainly deal with the domain name registration in Shanghai, China. On May 4, 2021, we received an application from Hongwei Ltd requested “***” as their internet keyword and China (CN) domain names (***.cn, ***.com.cn, ***.net.cn, ***.org.cn). But after checking it, we find this name conflict with your company name or trademark. In order to deal with this matter better, it’s necessary to send email to you and confirm whether this company is your business partner in China?

滚开
Love it!!
I got the same email today. I deleted it, I think they are trying to trick me right away.
Just received the same email today, they are still trying to scam at the end of 2021
The fact that it’s still going on is evidence that the scam works well.
They are still trying to scam people in 2022
Thank you for your post!
Scams grew over 600% during the pandemic so don’t trust any emails from people or companies you don’t know. I received this kind of email and replied, great then your client can buy my main domain for 1 million dollars that way he can have all the dot extensions for themselves.
And they are still at it!!! They are still trying to scam people in 2023.
EVERYONE PLEASE BE AWARE!
I did not respond after the second email they send, because I found this article.
