Investor used Whois search to connect the dots.
Snapchat (or just Snap) has filed to go public and its IPO is sure to make its early investors a nice return.
Lightspeed Ventures was the first venture capital firm to invest in the company. And how the firm was able to track down Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel is kind of interesting: it was based on a Whois search, writes Alyson Shontell of Business Insider.
Lightspeed partner Jeremy Liew didn’t get a response to an email he sent to Snapchat through its website. So he turned to Whois, where he was able to get a company name. That company name led Liew to Spiegel, and the rest is history.
Whois certainly has a purpose. Now, if we could just find a way to stop all of this SMS and robocall spam. I can handle the spam email, but this other stuff is getting out of control.

i rather deal with the spam and calls and have an open whois any day of the week.
Andrew Allemann says
I just registered some domains using my Google Voice number. I’ll be curious to see if there’s any uptick.
John says
The SMS spam needs to carry stiff penalties, just like the Do Not Call list. One of the worst things about being a domainer.
Andrew Allemann says
Yeah, but none of these do not call list violators get caught either. Find a way to catch these people and then we can figure out how to fine them.
Julio Maysonet says
From now on I will read more carefully all the emails I receive in my inbox and the spam folder.
Luke says
I get those spam calls almost daily – very frustrating!

I no longer answer my phone if I don’t recognize the number.
Andrew Allemann says
I hear ya…but I’ve missed some important calls because of that.
Patricia Kaehler says
I never answer my phone…
It clicks all day – at least I don’t have to listen to the rings etc…
I get an easy 35+ calls a day… (even on Sundays 5+)
I’m supposed to be over on Afternic working – I better stop reading posts… (smile)
