.Art switches backend providers.
CentralNic Group plc (AIM:CNIC) announced today that it will be the backend registry services provider for the .art top level domain name.
.Art operator UK Creative Ideas Limited originally selected Verisign as its backend provider.
This isn’t the first time Verisign has lost a top level domain contract to CentralNic. XYZ moved services for .security, .protection and .theatre to CentralNic after buying those TLDs.
Verisign subsequently sued, and the lawsuit was settled last month.
CentralNic has increased its number of clients after registries were originally named in applications. In addition to the wins from Verisign, it snagged Radix’s portfolio from ARI.
I believe CentralNic is offering very low pricing, especially on volume domains. It has also proven it can scale from a registrations standpoint, as it has processed over one million new .xyz domains within a few days.
Hummer says
Fairplay to CentralNic. It is a shame that Verisign will probably find some way to claim they have been unjustly ousted – a sign of an organisation unwilling to accept the lay of a competitive landscape…

Hello Andrew,
There is a Big Difference in letting loose of New TLD baggage, and as you say losing clients. More and more Regs are distancing themselves from Toxic New TLDs.
