Registrar built from the ground up to prevent domain name hijackings and hacks.
Leading CDN CloudFlare is launching a new domain name registrar focused on security.
There have been a number of high-profile domain name hijackings and defacements in recent years, and CloudFlare says its registrar will combat these sorts of attacks.
Companies will be able to set up multiple checks and approvals for changes to domain names. Also, domain names will be renewed a full year before they expire. (It still baffles me that large companies let domain names get just days before expiration before renewing them.)
CloudFlare explained its reason for creating the registrar:
Even in CloudFlare’s own search for a high-security registrar, we didn’t find anything that met our security standard. Rather than waiting for one to come onto the market, we built our own, fundamentally changing the way Registrar security is offered today.
Some registrars have offered added security tools that should prevent most domain hijackings, but companies haven’t been willing to pay for them or haven’t thought they were necessary — until something bad happens to them. Hopefully, by making the main mission of the registrar a focus on security, CloudFlare will be able to change the conversation and mindset about domain name security at top companies.
