In the week prior to Thanksgiving, 44 expired domain auctions surpassed $1000 at NameJet and SnapNames. 15 of those fell within the $2000-3000 range. Another 14 spread $3000-$8000. The top auction, as you can see, finished at $16.2k. Possibly, I missed a few.
NIWA.com could mean the National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research (for New Zealand). It could even be the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance. But my hunch is that it will end up abbreviating GetNIWA.com, a “smartphone-controlled” gardening system that raised $151k on KickStarter.

Clothing tags in the USA often sport “XL” as an abbreviation for “extra large”. Based on that, you might suppose that XL.biz ($7.6k) would brand an English-language website. Not so. The buyer is, in fact, Chinese. Below you’ll also find a pair of LLL.biz domains that sold for $154 / $315. Speculators have wondered which TLDs might absorb spillover demand from China. Some of them are betting on .BIZ.
Many domainers collect domains related to “future trends”, including virtual reality. SmartVR.com ($7.0k), seems to belong to that category. But Acteva.com ($3.9k) is a blast from the past – a notorious event-registration company, which incurred around $5 million in customer debt back in 2013. Even now, the top search results for “Acteva” focus on that scandal – including ActevaSucks.com at #2. Consequently, the domain may not be viable as a brand for years to come.
Cassiopeia.com ($3.8k) is a constellation. And ColoradoSprings.org ($4.1k) is the 2nd-largest city in Colorado, with over 400,000 inhabitants. While Viney.com ($3.1k) might be related to the popularity of Vine.co, it’s also a surname that has given rise to TheVineyAgency.com and a VineyCorp.com. Both DataCorp.com ($4.1k) and StoneGroup.com ($4.6k) can function as upgrades for multiple websites; I count 5 “Stone Group”s on page 1 of SERPs!

Along with the GEO domain above, .ORG scored 3 more 4-figure sales – dictionary words such as Outsourcing.org ($2.6k) and Migraine.org ($2.1k) as well as an LLL. As for .NET, it had 4 LLLs plus an LLLL between $1.4k and $2.8k. Every other expired 4-letter .NET that I saw fell in a much lower price range. 3 dozen of them populate these charts between $160 and $353, with only the 1 more expensive item. Beneath my $150 cutoff, there were others.
WildPlanet.com can shorten the name of the company behind your canned tuna. It’s also the name of the 2nd album by the B-52s:
Much as young children and cats enjoy Napping.com ($2.1k), I wouldn’t have thought that subject a MoneyMagnet.com ($1.6k). But we shall see.

Torano.com ($701) may be related to the cigar brand, Toraño, which was bought out last year. If you’re wondering about the value of Pinyin .NETs, FuZhuang.net ($899) provides a reference point: fú zhuāng (服装) is Chinese for “clothing”. SMSMessage.com ($1.1k) is redundant in the same way as “ATM Machine”, but it reflects people’s real habits.

EvictionServices.com ($564) is a good fit for the keyword “services”. Kicking tenants out of their home is 1 thing many landlords would prefer not to do directly, even when it must be done. Some enthusiast of Japanese cartoons may set himself up as an AnimeCritic.com ($490) and proceed to make a legion of enemies – to the point that he dare not show his face at Comic-Con.
You may recognize JohnPaul.com ($515) as a former pope. If you don’t recognize “Tamil” in TamilWeb.com, then it’s time to notice the 100 million people who speak it. In comparison, Italian is obscure.

RedTelecom.com ($343) may not be a color. “Red” is Spanish for “network”. ZIFX.com ($379) and Virtual-FX.net ($375) both contain “FX”, which is a shorthand for “Forex” – itself an abbreviation for the foreign exchange market. But who can tell? A 4-letter .NET in these charts also contains “FX”; yet its price is right in line with current LLLL.net trading, regardless of any meaning.
Ciniq.com ($326) looks like a creative misspelling of “cynic”. Google, however, interprets “ciniq” as a typo for a “creative pen display” called Cintiq. ICA2010Sydney.org ($360) refers to the International Congress of Acoustics, which convened in Australia 5 years ago. Unquestionably, such outdated domains hold little value apart from their back links.

AudioPile.com ($241) matches a .NET website that sells audio cables, speakers, and microphone stands. That is, of course, a pun on “audiophile” – i.e. someone obsessed with sound quality.

Noticing the 7-digit numerical domains? You’ll find them at $210, $270, and $605. Of course, 6-digit numerics go all the way up to $4.7k – an item with 4 consecutive lucky “8”s. Again and again, repeating patterns are the pattern. That’s true whether it be 7 numerals (5566006.com) or 5 letters (LMMML.com).
Mirknig.mobi ($201) may be related to the Russian bookstore at Mirknig.com, but what “mirknig” means I haven’t a clue. If they could speak, SriLankanInsects.net ($200) would speak either Tamil (see above) or Sinhalese.
