China dominated expired domain auctions last week, but this week the West reasserted itself. As many as 8 out of the top 20 auctions (40%) can still be laid on China’s doorstep; but previously the figure was 12 / 20 (60%). Since J-C.com ($4.2k) was purchased by someone in St. Louis, Missouri, that means the top Chinese sale – a 6-digit numerical domain – ranks only #7. Normally China wins at least 1 medal: gold, silver, or bronze. Unless this trend persists, I wouldn’t read too much into it. Last time, the top sales for both China and the West were 6 times higher; so the fluctuation week to week is considerable.
MyPerspective.com ($2.5k) would make a great name for a blog – modest, straightforward, and unassuming. iChem.com ($4.5k) looks like a potential upgrade for iChemLabs.com, which makes scientific software. While I found numerous distributors selling i-Chem bottles online, I didn’t see any website for the supplier’s brand itself. Domains tied to money tend to command higher prices. Hence we’ve got MyTaxReturn.com ($3.9k) and RefinanceMortgages.com ($3.6k).

KangYing.com ($2.4k) seems to be a personal name; but it may be better explained by ChinaKangYing.com, an English-language website for a company that manufactures electric bicycles, scooters, and ATVs. Another Pinyin domain, ZhaoBing.com ($1.7k) seems to mean military recruits (zhāo bīng / 招兵).

Comment.net ($1.7k) is an excellent .NET. Of course, I’m a bit partial to the word, as commenting is something I do regularly. For some wedding photographer out there, WeddingMemories.com ($1.6k) should make a very appealing brand name. StyleDirect.com ($1.3k) is a versatile e-commerce domain, suitable for shipping clothing, handbags, jewelry, even home decor.
For Catholics, OurLady.com ($1.3k) would mean the Virgin Mary. Tuotou.com ($1.3k) isn’t so clear. “Tuo” looks a bit Italian; “Tou” a bit French. Yet there’s a place called TuoTou in Jiangsu, East China. Complicating matters further, it’s also 2 typos rolled into 1: TouTou and TuoTuo. Whereas uncouth American dogs might say “bow wow” or “woof”, their more urbane French counterparts utter “TouTou”. (There seems to be a TouTou brand selling stuffed animals, based on image search results.) As for TuoTuo, it’s the headwater of the Yangtze river. Too many options to tell.

Grape.net ($1.0k) is another fine .NET specimen. For wine aficionados, that single syllable is almost holy. Who is TheAuthority.com ($899), and what is he an authority on? Based on the whois database, it’s too early to tell; but we shall see. Another “the” domain follows close on its heels: TheProspect.com ($807).
Cruises are offered in the USA’s Great Lakes; so GreatLakesCruises.com ($685) has obvious commercial relevance. YourSign.com ($645) must be for horoscopes. Indeed, there’s an astrological sign – Virgos.com – just above it. Considering that domain defines the individual destinies of 1/12 of the human race – past, present, and future – wouldn’t $757 be a bargain?

Decades ago, Zonked.com ($595) meant high on LSD. These days it just means exhausted. PrisonerLife.com ($569) might end up a reality TV show, a pen-pal program, or a program related to education and rehabilitation. Musically speaking, “soft” isn’t a word I associate with “metal”. But perhaps MetalSoft.com ($420) will scare prisoners straight by playing a non-stop death-metal cover of The Carpenters’ “Close To You”.
Here’s a rare sighting: ChimCanh.com ($454) is Vietnamese for “bird watching”. RomeHotel.com ($529) should generate accommodation leads. For a magician, MagicGuy.com ($520) is a strong simple brand name: “Hire the magic guy!”
JazzONLN.com ($510) exemplifies the sort of old-fashioned workaround naming convention that will die out due to .ONLINE and other nTLDs – as I’ve written in a couple of articles about domain fallback hierarchies. That doesn’t mean .COM itself will die out; but abbreviations such as “ONLN” deserve to die a thousand deaths, in my opinion.
If you’re Frank Schilling, LetsBeFrank.com ($470) might seem like a fun pun. But few of us are multi-millionaire tycoons; so it would actually be in bad taste. For a less affluent Frank, the same usage would be forgiven as cute. Just ein Gedankenexperiment in personal branding, eh. More likely, LetsBeFrank.com will anchor a marketing campaign that invites discussion about something controversial (politics?) or hitherto unmentionable (flatulence?).

Trashionista.com ($384) I quite like as a pun on “fashionista”. Achieving inner harmony is why people go to spas; therefore HarmonySpa.com ($298) is a strong name. And for Malta, MaltaNews.com ($344) makes perfect sense. Wonder what a PiratePartyCyprus.com ($409) entails? Abduction? Walking the plank?

BabyDo.com ($275) would be a good choice to brand a site about babies. Nagwa.com ($221) is a woman’s name in Arabic. The UnicornRestaurant.com ($269) is a popular spot in my old Seattle neighborhood, but the buyer may intend a different city.
The “till” in eTill.com would mean “cash register” to a British audience. Given that interpretation, it was a great buy – almost robbing the till. GetEMoney.com ($191) mines a similar niche. VRSale.com ($260) might interest those domainers who collect “virtual reality” domains. Yes, WereLoveMeat.net ($211) was a porn site. Don’t bother checking.

Localization consultants are paid for a reason. However excellent this French craft beer may be, Quercorb.com ($191) is probably doomed in the USA, thanks to its name. Most of my countrymen will pronounce it “queer korb” or “quirk orb”. Currently their website is BrasserieDuQuercorb.com; so this may be an upgrade. Another French domain, MediasLibres.com matches a .ORG site (“free media”) that aggregates articles with an “alternative” perspective.

Looking at TLDs other than .COM, what’s the first thing you notice? Two dozen LLLL.net domains selling between $104 and $175. That’s China for you. And I would stress that this wasn’t happening until very recently. Naturally, there are .NET and .ORG domains of other kinds selling above that range; but they’ve always been in the charts. This market demand for LLLL.net is a new phenomenon – spilling over from LLLL.com, which has been driven up into the $527 – $2.4k range, as you can see.
Apart from those, you’ll notice a couple of quality .INFOs – Copywriting.info ($118) and Appraisals.info ($161). SnapNames also sold a pair of .CLUBs: FiveStar.club ($110) and CareGivers.club ($110). Being a care giver can be a hard lonely experience; and .CLUB gives the job a much needed element of social support.

Unless the buyer’s name is Jack Daniel, JackDaniel.com ($505) is flirting with a future UDRP, it seems to me. The whiskey brand is not unknown. Difficult to imagine how YouTubeOnline.com ($114) could be defended from allegations of cybersquatting …
002002.com first sold at SnapNames for $720, but it was apparently re-auctioned the next day for $69. Possibly the original winning bidder didn’t pay. In these weekly articles, I endeavor to exclude seller-run auctions and only report results that are part of the normal expiration cycle. For NameJet, I act as a first-hand observer; but this isn’t true of SnapNames. If you notice any non-expired domain auctions, please let me know.
Fivestar.club and CareGiver.club for $110 each. SnapNames .CLUB auctions are handing out names like candy at Halloween.
@Colin Campbell,
I saw BTC.club sell also for a higher price than those 2. But it didn’t seem to be an ordinary expired auction; therefore I excluded it from these charts. If that was a mistake, let me know.
Joseph, thank you for taking the time and effort to make your reports fun and engaging to read. It helps make this sifting through names more interesting.
You’re welcome, Logan. Write-ups like these can be unflatteringly dense; so I wonder how often I succeed in making them readable. Thanks for the feedback.
