Great questions and answers in this interview Andrew and Ryan. Thanks.
“Valuations have come down” . Kind of weird to say valuations are down on a domain you’d call ultra-premiums . . . a bit of an oxymoronic phrase.
I don’t do sell side brokerage of what Ryan’s definition of “ultra-premium domains” would be, but I can tell you I’ve seen some good deals in that space . . people selling domains in this arena. I just bought one myself. . . I still like these. While they may be “category defining” in some sense, they seem to be getting beat up a bit.
I personally find the one word brand like Jet.com to fit the definition of “ultra-premium” atm, These are not just a one word category defining name, it can stand alone in a variety of ways from a brand perspective. This is the sort of an “empty vessel” domain. It’s a single word that can be applied in a variety of ways. I’m seeing more demand and higher pricing for these.
I also find that start-ups with a war-chest (keeping in mind most startups don’t have any money) are after these domains because they are building a consumer brand. From my perspecitve they tend to like these much more than “category-defining” domains. Behind that as a choice I see brandable types (made up or “coined” phrases) coming in second to the “empty vessel” one worders . Maybe “category killer” after that. . . I’m just not seeing demand there though. Just my 2c in gauging the market.
I’m curious what are other brokers say ? Let’s hear it brokers ?
