What is Network Solutions pitching to its customers in all of that email? Here’s the answer.
Anyone who has registered a domain name with Web.com registrars Network Solutions and Register.com know that the company sends lots of promotional emails. How many? One per business day.
Now, I know a lot of retailers send daily promotional emails to customers. But I’m not aware of other registrars that do this. If nothing else, it shows there’s not much more juice the company can ring out of customers via email promotions.
For the past month, rather than deleting all of my Network Solutions emails, I decided to keep track of each marketing pitch. Here’s what I received, with subject lines in quotes:
Sept 9: “About your SolveTheMystery.com domain name” – Offer to build website for free (which has ongoing costs) and provide marketing (e.g. Google Adwords).
Sept 10: “This domain could be yours!” – Trying to sell the .net version of a .com I own. The .net is a premium domain syndicated through Afternic.
Sept 11: “Final Day to Claim Your Website + Bonus” – Same offer as September 9.
Sept 14: “Account Notice: Your Complimentary Consultation” – Offers a free 30 minute consultation to improve your online presence. In other words: a 30 minute sales pitch.
Sept 15: “govolleyball.net is now available. Don’t miss this chance!” – Same offer as September 10.
Sept 16: “Reminder – Don’t Forget About Your Complimentary Consultation” – Same offer as September 14.
Sept 17: I didn’t get an email. Maybe it went to spam?
September 18: “Status of Your Website” – Promotion for search engine and directory submission.
September 21: “5 Day Sale on Websites” – Discount on custom websites.
September 22: “govolleyball.net is now available. Don’t miss this chance!” – Same premium domain sale offer. (As a domain seller, I appreciate that they’re pushing aftermarket domains.)
September 23: “Don’t Let solvethemystery.com Get Lost Online!” – Discount on custom websites.
September 24: “Your Account: Status Update” – Promotion to add website, SEM, social media and mobile marketing.
September 25: “Time’s Running Out – Get a Custom Website Today” – The same custom website discount.
September 28: “Status of Your Website” – Same search engine submission promo as September 18.
September 29: “Account Notice: Your Complimentary Consultation” – another chance to get my free 30 minute sales pitch.
September 30: “This domain could be yours!” – GoVolleyball.net is still available as a premium domain.
Oct 1: “Secure govolleyball.net before someone else does” – Another day, another promotion to buy an aftermarket domain.
Oct 2: “Reminder – Don’t Forget About Your Complimentary Consultation” – Same 30 minute consultation/sales pitch.
Oct 5: “Special Invitation for Andrew” – Build website and get online marketing.
Oct 6: “govolleyball.net is now available. Don’t miss this chance!” – Still available…
Oct 7: “About your solvethemystery.com domain name” – Build website and get online marketing.
Oct 8: “Alert — Missing Information on Google” – Offer to create a Google My Business profile.
Oct 9: “Final Day to Claim Your Website + Bonus” – Same as Oct 7, Oct 5, Sept 11 and Sept 9.
So there you go…one month of Network Solutions promotional emails. Now you don’t have to bother opening them yourself.
