China is back with AISE.com ($19.5k) foremost among expired domain sales at NameJet. These days any LLLL.com attracts bids, whatever the letters; yet this domain ought to be classified as meaningful Pinyin rather than as an acronym or an arbitrary 4-letter string. In Chinese, ài / 愛 means “to love”; and sè / 色 means “color”, “appearance”, or “sex”. Therefore it may be that China likes sex more than AISE, the Italian equivalent of the CIA, loves espionage – more even than AISE, a European consortium of 900 cleaning companies, loves soaps and detergents.

BioScan.com ($13.0k) fits all sorts of medical technologies. For instance, Bio-Scan.com supplies used radiology parts, while iBioScan.com detects microbial contaminants in water. We’ll see later who buys it. CiaoBella.com ($10.0k) – which, though it might be translated as “Hello, Beautiful”, also means goodbye – is the name of a sim game, a gelato brand, a line of designer shoes, and at least half a dozen Italian restaurants in the USA. Those companies may have been bidding, but a domain investor won the auction.
It isn’t every week that we see 3 .ORG domains sell above $2k at what is – remember – mainly a wholesale venue. Not only did this happen last week at NameJet, but 2 of the 3 were 2 words long. What’s up? .ORG suits the topic of civil rights in the case of TransgenderLaw.org, but much of the $4.0k value may derive from backlinks. For 15 years, that website was maintained with reference material. And based on the old @CUNY.edu email address, it may have been affiliated with the City University of New York. (.EDU backlinks tend to be especially prized for SEO.) Something similar explains MDGMonitor.org, an 8-year-old website that tracked progress on the “millennium development goals” of 189 UN member states.

Gitanes.com sold surprisingly cheap at $1.4k, considering that it’s a French cigarette brand within the portfolio of Imperial Tobacco, a company whose market cap is $46.1 billion. Literally, “gitanes” means gypsy women. Apparently the world is carpeted in rug worlds: TheRugWorld.co.uk and RugWorld-Online.co.uk in the UK, RugWorldInc.com.au in Australia, and RugWorld.co.nz in New Zealand. No surprise then that somebody wanted RugWorld.com ($2.0k).
At first, I read PetGate.com ($1.2k) as some sort of Watergate-like scandal. What have Fido and Mittens been implicated in this time? Put them behind bards with barriers like these! As with the 2-word .ORG sales discussed above, BrazilEMB.org ($1.3k) was an official reference site – since 1998, the home of the Brazilian Embassy in Washington DC.

Several newspapers are called “The Sun”; so SunReporter.com ($710) might go to any of them. For LuckyValley.com ($598), there’s a Lucky Valley Press and a Lucky Valley Resort in Malaysia. Lametayel.com matches a Hebrew travel site built on Israel’s ccTLD, .CO.IL, while SouthernShores.org could be a town on the outer banks of North Carolina.
GoldenHat.com ($664) can be taken literally. Here’s an American football player wearing the cowboy-hat trophy on his head. Apparently, this rivalry between the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners dates back to 1900. There’s also a GoldenHatFoundation.org, which focuses on autism.

UpVotes.com ($470) is a term I’m encountering more and more online. Much like a Like-Button.net ($242), upvotes allow readers to rank responses. Gowri might be a Hindu festival, a Telugu Bollywood film, or simply a personal name like Madilyn.com ($410). Personally I rarely like names that rob a vowel. This practice seems especially unwise in cases like Splicd.com ($480) where that missing “e” changes the pronunciation to “c” = “s” from “c” = “k” .
You’ll notice a smattering of .CO domains in the mix – domains such as Tasty.co ($260) and Lulu.co ($209). Last week the chart had a number of expired .INFOs. In each case, the FLDs (strings to the left of the dot) have been quite strong. Consequently, this gives us a fair indication of how new TLDs will fare in the aftermarket. With .INFO and .CO selling in this range, less established nTLDs can hardly expect better. To be clear, I’m talking about “generalist” TLDs (rather than niche-specific keywords) and about the wholesale market.

Balanced.net was a good buy at $200. .NET placed a pair of LLLs at $1.3k and $1.8k as well as Joomlana.net ($810), which I suppose is about Joomla. Seems to me that someone got a better than okay price on OQAY.com ($180) as well. Arielles.com ($165) corresponds to an Arielle’s Cafe and an Arielle’s Country Inn – both restaurants. WebinarPro.com ($131) and MushroomFest.com ($140) both deserve to be used.

OnDemandMusic.com ($109) is a big topic. Several major companies have “on demand” brands for video; and many more feature the phrase prominently on their websites – Time Warner, DirecTV, Xfinity, Vimeo, Verizon, et al. It remains to be seen how important the “on demand” phrase will be outside video.

If you saw Nederland.co and thought of the Netherlands, think again! There’s a town called Nederland in Colorado using NederlandCO.org. (“CO” is the state abbreviation.) Ischigualasto.com ($80) is a national park in Argentina that looks quite a bit like Utah and Arizona. Believe it or not, YoMommaSo.com spent 8 years as a repository of “Yo Mama” jokes … as in: “Yo ‘Yo Mama So’ domain so old, her birth certificate expired.”
