Alphabet uses .xyz domain name.
Google announced a new holding company called Alphabet today, and it’s using the domain name ABC.xyz.
This is a huge win for Daniel Negari’s .xyz, and new top level domains in general.
Google will be part of Alphabet, but some of the company’s more long term bets will be separate companies operating under Alphabet.
Reading Larry Page’s intro note on ABC.xyz, I couldn’t help but compare it to Hooli.xyz, the fictitious company from HBO’s Silicon Valley that is modeled somewhat after Google. (As it turns out, abc.xyz links to hooli.xyz.)
I don’t think ABC.xyz will be used much since it’s just the holding company’s name, but it could possibly become the email address for some employees. It will also likely be used for all investor information and announcements in the future.
I suspect the ABC.xyz domain name sold for six figures.
Alphabet.com is owned by BMW. ABC.com is owned, of course, by the entertainment company.
whoa…
Truth is stranger than fiction: http://domaingang.com/domain-news/negari-xyz-is-only-the-beginning-not-the-end/
ABC.xyz is a 1-off novelty. Since it isn’t a naming concept that can be repeated even once, it points the way to nothing.
That idea – 2 pieces of bread to sandwich an implied alphabet in between – is clever in a predictable way. Everybody thought of it, when .XYZ first appeared on the scene, as the 1 .XYZ domain it might be fun to own for awhile.
What’s interesting to me here is how Google is positioning its brand with an implied revisionist history:
“We did a lot of things that seemed crazy at the time. Many of those crazy things now have over a billion users, like Google Maps, YouTube, Chrome, and Android. And we haven’t stopped there.”
To hear Larry Page (‘s ghost writer) say this, you’d assume – if you didn’t already know better – that Google invented the likes of Youtube rather than gobbling up others’ innovations through expansionist buyouts.
Obviously the image Google would like to project is one of diverse, continual exploration and innovation rather than acquisitive monopolistic takeovers. It’s as if we’re hearing them say, “If there’s something on the internet you enjoy, please believe we at Google made it for you.”
2 companies I dislike, XYZ Registry and Google – a marriage made in heaven!
“If there’s something on the internet you enjoy, please believe we at Google made it for you.”
Good one, I really loved that!
Why would the average person care?
This info amounts to this much for xyz l—–l
‘…used for all [Google’s] investor information…’ That would make sense. As semi-obscure as the domain is, it couldn’t be for punters.
Good naming idea, though, as @Peterson lays out above. But pretty gauche for a company dodging accusations of monopoly…why not just email Swatch and get ‘IAmAlphaAnd.Omega.’
“I suspect the ABC.xyz domain name sold for six figures.” Any supporting evidence?
What strikes here is that Google decided not to use one of its own new TLDs.
Yeah, I’m not sure which one they would have chosen. Which of their’s would be relevant?
This is a very unique one, too. first thing letters . last three letters of the alphabet
kind of an argumentum ad authoritatum here- Google says .xyz is relevant, so everyone should accept its relevant.
But .xyz has a bit of a revisionist thing to its- its so meaningless, it creates a special space for itself.lol.
alphabet.co.in undersold($2k) cuz the seller probably didnt know big G was behind the purchase.
What a bonehead move. I see another O.co switcharoo down the road. This means the guys that started Google were lucky SOBs.
Definitely, this kind of change benefits more the mainstream coders and itveterans. And its just been blocked in China as fastco reports in its blog.
They should have tried to buy a-z.com. That wouldn’t make them look so dumb.
A hyphen? That’s like ‘cyber.’ It is to shudder.
Occam’s Razor: One should not increase, beyond what is necessary, the number of entities required to explain anything.
AtoZ.com > (a-z.com ~ abc.xyz)
