Company releases updated figures for renewal rates.
New top level domain name company Donuts has released updated renewal rates for the first 25 top level domain names it launched. Rates range from about 55% to 72%, well under the company’s predicted 80% renewal rate. (The company now says it expects rates to trend toward 80% later in the year.)
The highest renewal rate belongs to .technology at 71.7%. The lowest is .directory at just 54.7%.
.Guru, which received more first year registrations than any other Donuts domain, has a renewal rate of 57.5%. The company believes there were “a disproportionate number of speculative buyers” in .guru.
So what does this mean for other top level domain names that are approaching renewal? It’s hard to say with certainty. There are a lot of variables at play here, including price.
What will happen with .club, which has a large number of registration (over 200,000)? Lots of registrations means the marginal quality of the most recent domains are perhaps lower than ones in smaller domains. At the same time, .Club is priced lower than Donuts’ domains.
The best indicator might be usage, as Donuts suggests in its blog post.
One thing is for sure: it’s not easy predicting renewal rates.

Hello Andrew
Hello Andrew,
Its no secret to the Really Smart Money where the highest velocity of Registrations and Renewals are going on in , in the .COM Plaform Extensions. Sustained Regs and Renewals are happening in the .COM Platform Extensions. JAS 4/16/15

The natural renewal rate in these early years will be 50-70%. Depending on the price of the string. We’re seeing 60 and 70% renewals as of today in our first two strings (.sexy and .tattoo) Those who weren’t around at the time should know that renewals were low in the early years of .com too. People back then would kite the Internic/Network Solutions payment system to extend their registrations. I remember in the late 90’s hotmail.com expiring (before it was acquired by MSFT) and the whole mail system going down. Folks would buy names back then and subsequently let them go, thinking they could just reclaim a name whenever they felt like it. Nobody ever thought someone else might want “their” name after expiry. As less domainers buy these and more regular businesses dip in and get the names that correlate to their businesses, the renewal rates will come up. History doesn’t repeat but it rhymes and these renewal rates rhyme with the early and mid 1990’s .com era.

Hello Frank,
We know that the real secret to Sustained Renewals like the .COM Platform Extensions have experienced for thirty years now ,are the real key. the newgTLDs will not have SUSTAINED LONG TERM SUCCESS. JAS 4/16/15

The real secret is the virtual monopoly Verisign has enjoyed with .COM for three decades. Users are embracing new gTLDs, and that is demonstrated by renewal rates in the 70+% range for those domains. These are all much higher than the renewal rate for .COM names registered during the same time (50% or lower).

Hello Bradley,
The current Hype being created has generated ARB like Phony financial support. It will all be exposed in the dirty wash eventually, Count on it ! JAS 4/21/15

50%-70% seems reasonable based on Donuts’ results so far. Will be interesting to revisit after seeing data from multiple TLDs at multiple price points and level of affinity.

Hello Andrew.
Thanks for the reply :
Its just very interesting to us, how the renewal rate quandry for the New gTLD Quasi- Derivative, seems to be somewhat covered ??? JAS 4/16/15
Jeff Schneider says
Hello Andrew,
We suspect a high Probability of 90% That there is phony support of the New Gtld Quasi-Derivative Extensions, Very similar to ARB support in the Stock Market. Whats really going on behind The New GTLD Quasi-Derivative OZ curtain ??? JAS 4/16/15

Whatever the time it takes for registration figures to increase: they will increase and keep generating cash. Anyone working on his retirement planning should consider applying for a new gTLD in Round 2.
Only $25 Domains says
I hope this was written as sarcasm, because many of the new gTLD’s will never have an increase and will just go under
Jean Guillon says
No it wasn’t but who minds about htis but .com lovers?

Hello Jean Guillon,
We seriously question your background experience in the Domain Name Systems Hierarchy. Our collective experience in years is over 100 years. Our experience tells us you are 99% off base here.
By the way when will you stop blocking us from expressing opinions on your LinkedIn forum of which we were your Top Contributor until you blocked us from stating our valued opinions ??JAS 4/21/15

Jeff: you are great.

They’ve got to get their registration price down and better quality three- and four-letter gTLDs. No one wants “.contractor,” or at least not yet (maybe in 60-80 years).
By aggregating the operation of multiple TLDs on a scalable platform, they should have a much, much lower operating cost, even if their total number of TLDs is much, much lower than a VeriSign, NeuStar or Afilias.
Until that happens, .club will continue to be the leader among the new gTLDs (though I’m a recently converted Frank Schilling critic/doubter into a fan, having moved my domains from GoDaddy.com into Uniregistrar – I used to loathe him and his business tactics under Name Administration Inc but I’m really liking what he’s done in the domain name space with Uniregistry, Uniregistrar and DomainNameSales.com).
Cheers,
Doug
