One more way to look at the top level domain leaderboards.
Registries have sliced and diced the new top level domain name leaderboards in many ways: paid registrations, registration years, number of domains used, Alexa rankings, etc. Here’s another one courtesy of StartingDot, the company behind .Bio, .Archi and the forthcoming .Ski.
StartingDot has ranked the top 50 “Premium” gTLDs, with premium defined as an average retail price of at least $40. Since StartingDot’s domains are priced high, it helps its own rankings.
Here are the top 5 as of March 31:
xxx 101,628 domains @ avg $80
expert 28,692 domains @ $47
global 10,811 domains @ $82
lawyer 10,532 domains @ $41
bio 9,003 domains @ $66
There are a couple big caveats to these rankings. Notably, it excludes IDNs and geographic domain names. The average retail price is based on Gandi, Dynadot and Marcaria.com. And of course, .xxx has been out much longer than the others.
Taking a look at the top 50 (pdf), you’ll note that only a dozen had 5,000 or more registrations as of the end of Q1.
There’s an interesting question around this: what is the price elasticity of demand for domain name registrations?
