NameJet set a record during January with the most sales over $2k it has ever reported – 148 domain auctions in all. Its previous record was 131 sales back in December 2013. To put that in perspective, NameJet’s top month during all of 2014 scored only 105 sales; and its 2014 monthly mean was 78. Just 8 more sales, and the market place would have doubled last year’s average.
At the same time, NameJet’s highest sale during January ($29.1k) was below average – ranking 24th out of 44 months on record. Last year, 11 out of 12 months outperformed that $29.1k high. The previous January climbed as high as $155.7k.
What do these seemingly contradictory numbers tell us? They show a consolidated upsurge in 4 and low 5-figure sales without the distraction of ultra-expensive outliers. In other words, a healthy market with high, stable valuations and few flukes.
Whereas in past months I’ve looked at highlights from NameJet’s list, discussing them one pair at a time, on this occasion I’ve decided to experiment with the format. All 148 domains are present below, divided into groups.

January’s not-so-high high sale, SelfieSticks.com, was already discussed in one of my weekly articles on the expired market. WireTap.com wasn’t #2; it was #8. In between was a desert of LLL.com’s and one 4-digit numeric. Apart from its meaning of eavesdropping on phone conversations, “Wire Tap” is a popular CBC radio program.

Casinos, Vegas, and gambling constitute a high-value niche within the domain market. Nearly every article I’ve written includes specimens. Last month I discussed a couple – one of which sold for $15.3k. For obvious reasons, domains about money … attract money.

DOTS.org | 6766 | Darwin.net | 2101 |
This was NameJet’s only .ORG sale in the over-$2k list for January. During 2014, there were often 8 or 9 .ORGs reported per month – with 52 for the year. So for a month with record numbers, this percentage is especially low. Actually, there are just 5 .NETs in the January list. 142 out of 148 domains were .COM. Darwin had a phrase for that: survival of the fittest.

I really like this new format of arranging the sales by group Joseph and appreciate the time it must take to do this, along with adding your insightful commentary.
In some cases there can be a crossover of the groupings, eg. RaceCourse.com could easily have also fit into your gambling category.
Keep up the excellent work.
That’s definitely true about RaceCourse.com; it would have fit better alongside the gambling set, in fact.
I like the format; but it’s probably too time-consuming to bear repeating. Other projects get jealous.
