Last week’s 200+ expired domain name sales up to $27.1k

In this report, Joseph Peterson discusses over 200 expired domain name sales from last week.

A picture is worth a thousand words, and these – depicting KPF’s architectural plan for the Meixi district of Changsha, a capital city in China – go a long way to explaining the $27.1k high bid in NameJet’s auction of Meixi.com last week. Half Dubai, half Venice. I’d love to see the place if they ever build it.

Buyers of acronym domains like SIGI.com ($8.8k) are hard to pin down until whois records change or a site shows up at the other end. Just for starters, we have “The Sisterhood is Global Insitute” over at .ORG; Selective Insurance, a company currently trading as “SIGI” on the NASDAQ; and SIGI³, a student career guidance test (now in its 3rd iteration), which is made by ETS, the nonprofit organization that administers most of the USA’s standardized testing from the SAT, AP tests, and TOEFL to the GRE for getting into grad school.

Conchita.com ($6.1k) is a Spanish woman’s name, short for Concepción. Search results for “Conchita” are obsessed with Conchita Wurst, a drag singer who won the 2014 Eurovision contest. Personally I prefer a different Conchita (Supervia), now largely forgotten.

“Inc” fits very nicely in the name StartupInc.com ($1k), since most startups will incorporate early on. Plenty of people are looking for SalesResults.com ($9.6k). And, as a slogan, JustBetter.com ($959) is just plain good. Most of you will recognize Bonjour.tv ($660) as “Hello” / “Good Day” in French. As it happens, this matches a French-language TV network not in France but in the USA.

Salmiya.net is a region of Kuwait. Bitacoras.net, meaning “blogs” in Spanish, corresponds to a .COM website that Alexa ranks #464 in Spain. It’s interesting to see both SunTours.com ($6.7k) and SunSki.com ($778) sell together in the same week. RealRock.com is either this or this. But I guess if both can smash things, both are real.

Over at GoDaddy, the highest selling expired domain that I saw last week was an NNNN.com: 6474.com ($4k). Skipping over a 4-worder that I take to be a back-link-motivated buy, we begin to see some more solid domain names beginning with TrendWatch.com ($3k). ThemePress.com ($2.9k) is a nod in WordPress’s direction that still respects their trademark.

Around the time CubaOnline.com was selling for $2.6k, some of us were sitting around the DNW campfire debating the upcoming .ONLINE TLD. One way or another, sales like this have some bearing on matching nTLDs. Same goes for IndianaGardenClub.com ($106) for .CLUB, TexasRealEstateSite.com ($100) for .SITE, and TheUniversityReview.com ($100) for .REVIEW, etc.

Perhaps the most noticeable pattern last week at GoDaddy involved 2-character .BIZ domains. The highest bids were for AA.biz, which clocked in just under $900. Two numerics did less than half that: 70.biz and 34.biz ($405). And you’d need to cut that amount still further to get to the other 4 LL.biz domains: FU.biz ($332), OA.biz ($236), XN.biz ($230), and JQ.biz ($155). Whatever the brand value of .BIZ, it seems that last week was not its best showing in the wholesale market.

Let’s continue with a few of the more expensive auctions … Norwich.net ($1.4k) is a city in England and at least 2 in the USA, in addition to being a military academy. Izlesimdi.com ($1.3k) was some sort of Turkish tube site that Google Translate declares (rather dubiously) means “Youtube Now”. SmileTech.com ($1.2k) forwards, as you’d expect, to a dentist’s website.

You’ll see a cluster of domains for state criminal attorneys: VirginiaCriminalLawyers.com ($313), KansasCriminalLawyers.com ($206), UtahCriminalLawyers.com ($101), and FloridaDefenseAttorney.com ($291). If a shorter legal brand were needed, there’d be Lawster.com ($333).

BTC.mobi ($410) combines a hot topics (bitcoin) with a cold gTLD. We have a pair of genies: SmartGenie.com ($450) and AskGenie.com ($355). Also, there are a couple of calendars: MarketCalendar.com ($110) and StudentCalendar.com ($105).

Some of the other standouts, from where I’m sitting, include ValueSell.com ($200), iVotes.com ($518), Sivox.com ($105), PIQQ.com ($165), FindHash.com ($115), GlobalVoices.org ($255), ShirtSavers.com ($105), SchoolProductions.com ($101), Sweat.info ($176) for people with sweat problems, and TheUniversityReview.com ($100). PillowTalks.com ($111) and MakeupShakeups.com ($85) would be better in the singular. OpenAppliance.com ($265) would be ideal for open virtualization.

I can’t help wondering what 20 centuries of Christians would make of a $1301 price tag on TheBodyOfChrist.com – which is what the eucharist becomes, according to the Catholic doctrine of transubstantion, during the sacrament. $1 more would have bought a 2-year-old French porno domain. Times have changed.
