Joseph Peterson reviews the past week’s expired domain sales.
Pretty soon, not speaking Chinese will disqualify me from reporting on the domain market altogether! So many of the big-ticket domain sales look eastward — numerical domains, LL through LLLL, and Chinese Pinyin. China dominated NameJet charts in September, and China tops the list of last week’s GoDaddy expired auctions as well with ChaoZhi.com ($26k). One possible meaning of “Chāo Zhī”, believe it or not, is “overspend”. But it’s also a personal name. Honestly, with Chinese I’ll never get my bearings until I buckle down and teach myself Mandarin. Perhaps some native speaker out there can point me in the right direction on this one … or 66Yun.cc ($10.6k).
Is it safe to assume that the $20k spent on ABOV.com is predicated on the English word whose “e” is missing, or will that somehow turn out to be Chinese too? With KAOLTI.com ($5.1k), I can discern no language at all; but it once was a logo gallery in English. Meanwhile, HuanLeFuqi.com at one time forwarded to a Chinese-Canadian website, LEQI.ca, about wife swapping or mail order brides.
Chinese isn’t the only foreign language represented last week. The Hebrew Ladaat.net ($585) corresponds to a news site built on .INFO. And Tidningar.info ($435)? It’s Swedish for “newspapers”. XemDaGa.com ($707) leads to Vietnamese cock fighting. PhimSexTrucTuyen.info ($321) was Vietnameese porn, and the .MOBI still is. That’s not the first time Vietnamese adult domains have been charted; I’ve reported sales above $3k during multiple weeks, including odd TLDs like .MOBI. By now, that certainly constitutes a pattern.
Spanish — a language more often seen in the GoDaddy charts than Hebrew or Swedish — wasn’t absent. Contigola.com ($567) is probably “Contigo L.A.” — “with you” in Los Angeles. ElGranCine.com ($511) refers to the movies, film, cinema. We also have swimming pools with AquaPiscinas.com ($196) and the “employment office”, BolsaDeEmpleo.org ($153).
Good old English hasn’t kicked the bucket yet. But if AWSEM.com ($45o) is the awful search-engine marketing pun I think it is, then I’d like to gouge out my English-reading eyeballs!

The low end of the price spectrum at GoDaddy shows some interesting items. Anywhere money is in play scams abound. Especially after the collapse of Mt. Gox, the idea of a BitcoinScam.com ($55) would be on people’s minds. Whether for crypto-currency enthusiasts or coin collectors, CoinBlogger.com ($105) isn’t half bad.
Who could say no to HelpPuppies.com ($105)? You might recognize AASPCA.org ($47) as the “American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals” with an extra “A”. And both of those echo TheHumaneAssociationOfCNY.org ($205). You may not recognize the “MUD” in MUDGamers.com, but some of you nerds must have played those text-based computer role-playing games back in the day. “MUD” stands for “multi-user dungeon”.
Several sales appear to be related to new TLDs: BioPharmaToday.com ($116), DiegoGarciaNYC.com ($265), and MaisonNYC.com ($190). In the midst of .NYC hubbub, NewYorkNewYorkWebDesign.com sold for $405. Are these coincidences?
SCOTUS.org was startingly undervalued at $37. No, that’s not 13th-century theologian Duns Scotus. It’s the “Supreme Court of the United States”. I may not have my finger on TheNationsPulse.com ($131); but I know enough to realize that, if there’s one thing kids these days don’t need help with, it’s social media. Yet SocialMediaForKids.com sold for $295.
Existing brands are always targeted. At GoDaddy last week we saw ApplebeesForYou.com ($405); OperaBrowser.com ($325); CustomHarley.com ($148); and Hazna.com ($116), which is a hijab maker. Likewise, at NameJet squatters had a broad menu of options, including Cinnabun.com ($120) and Jeopardy.tv ($80).
NameJet sold a quality brand name in Magnetix.com ($7.5k). And someone named Mike is hoping to replicate Craig’s success with MikesList.com ($5.6k). Repeating sounds are FunFun.com ($3k) if we can believe Peppe.com ($3.2k), DOID.com ($1.5k), and Cooco.com ($1.2k).

Many people swear by dowsing rods as a way to locate underground water. Apart from digging wells, I’ve known construction managers to bring in specialists to locate water lines. Based on that, I’d say Dowser.com ($787) is worth more than its purchase price. So is LosAngelesStorage.com ($343) given the concentration of people and their stuff in crowded cities. Another smart purchase was BankWise.com ($610). When a buyer arrives — and they will — they will have a bank’s budget to work with.
Now, be honest! How many of you would take Mittens to CatTherapy.com?
Kassey says
Depending on the tone, you get different results in Chinese. That’s why you can have your Chao Zhi (超支, overspend) and you may also have 超智 (Chao Zhi, very intelligent) when you lower the tone.
Now, how about a little bit of fun with numbers in Chinese?

Joseph Peterson says
I’m assuming the more optimistic meaning 超智 (Chao Zhi, very intelligent) explains the purchase. Fair?
Kassey says
It could easily be the name of a company. It’s a good brand. I tried Baidu but did not find any company using that name. So I have no idea who bought it.
Song says
The bidder for “Chaozhi” probably refers to “超值“, which could mean “super worth it” or “very much worth it”. A good name indeed.
