Session will help progress toward universal acceptance of new TLDs.
Google’s developer-focused conference Google I/O kicks off tomorrow, and one of the sessions will focus on new TLDs.
CIO Ben Fried will lead a presentation about new top level domain names at 1PM CDTPDT on June 25. The presentation will be streamed live on the web.
Here’s the description:
Who cares about new domain names? We do. If you want happy users, then you should too
The first new generic top-level domains are coming online, from .photography to .みんな. Who cares, you say? We do. We’ll tell you how the explosion of new domain names means cool things for the future of the web. But it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. New domain names also mean new challenges for all of us. In fact, they’re probably already breaking your products. Join us to find out what’s happening, get a glimpse at what’s coming, and learn what we all need to do now to prepare.
These sorts of presentations are key for moving toward universal acceptance of new top level domain names.

Less emphasis should be placed on WHO is talking about the new gTLDs. The personality doesn’t really change anything on the ground.
You see, the airplane was invented before motorcycles; so humans perfected long distance travel by airplanes, so when motorcycles and bicycles came out, nobody tried to pitch man to use those mode of transportation to cross the Atlantic, for example.
So it is for the dot com (airplane), and the new gTLDs (bikes).
No matter what the Google executive says in his presentation, bikes can’t beat airplanes traveling from New York to London. He could be for it, but most of his audience will be scratching their heads.

A nice little analogy about planes and bikes but I doubt its really relevant to what’s actually happening and Google’s powerful influence in the space.
I think only a fool would bet against the new TLDs at this stage.

Googles catch 22 will be to monopolize their powerfull position and this will ultimately facilitate their downfall.
ALL monopolies overstep their self imposed boundaries sooner or later. 6/24/14

Do people really believe that 😉

In the meantime, whilst people are awaiting the demise of Google (lol), they might as well build up a good portfolio of the new domains to profit from the shift…..it might take Google some time to realize its days are numbered 😉
JZ says
how many new gtlds domains do you own personally philip? surely with all if your inside knowledge you must have built up a great portfolio by now.
Philip says
Yup!
Patricio says
Philip, you sound like Robert Cline who pushed .co for two years and then just disappeared. I’m going to assume you’ll disappear also.
Philip says
Nope!

I think the actual start time is 1:00pm PDT (not CDT; wouldn’t want anyone to miss the livestream)..
Andrew Allemann says
You’re correct — fixed it.

Did anyone get to watch it or know where it can be viewed on youtube (can’t find it)
