Company markets six of its domain names to photography industry.
New top level domain registry Donuts is exhibiting at the The Photography Show 2014 in Birmingham, England. The show began Saturday and runs through tomorrow.
The company is pitching a number of domain names that have a relationship to photography including .camera, .equipment, .gallery, .photos, .lighting, and of course .photography.
This is exactly the type of end-user marketing that new domain name registries will need to do. I am a bit surprised to see Donuts doing it, however. The company initially said that it sells one product — new TLDs — and that it didn’t expect to really market any of the domains individually.
But this marketing will be key to growing registration bases in niche domain names. .Fish needs to be marketing at fishing shows, .jewelry at jewelry shows, and yoga and yoga practitioner shows.
Donuts’ presence at the UK Photography Show is a positive sign for new TLDs.
I agree that this type of marketing is essential for the new Registries. Of course, registrars can do it too.
For many, building trust (still) requires face-to-face interactions.

Hmmm … how small is a ‘niche’ to be viable as a TLD?

PS: and that is only the EN markets.
That, for me as a photographer.. Is a question I’ve asked myself many times..
