.Guru tops 10,000 domain name registrations and Donuts now has around 25,000 registered second level domain names.
People placed a lot of pre-orders for new top level domain names…
On the first day of general availability, the .guru namespace grew to over 12,000 domain names, based on zone files published this evening.
At over 10,000 strings second level domains, they pretty much cover the spectrum. And yes, some trademarks were registered by people other than the trademark holders.
Here are approximate zone file numbers for the other seven Donuts domains to enter general availability today:
1. .Guru 12,400
2. .Bike 3,700
3. .Clothing 2,850
4. .Singles 2,000
5. .Ventures 1,650
6. .Plumbing 1,050
7. .Holdings 950
Mr. Allemann,
Could you succinctly explain the Zone-file stuff to me, and please include whether it is completely fool-proof, and independent as far as manipulation is concerned; I’m not very familiar with it. As you know, I’m watching this very carefully, and realize that success begets success, I’m trying to use metrics that are sure bankers. Thanks.
Domenclature, the zone file is made up of all domains registered in the TLD that have nameservers attached to them. All of the domains can be looked up in whois. The zone file is an accurate way to find out how many domains are registered in a particular TLD (and is often used by analysts covering Verisign), although it also slightly undercounts the number of domains b/c some don’t have nameservers assigned.
Thank you.
…and to think that I saw it on Mulberry Street.
Andrew,
How are you counting these? As an example, for the .GURU, how did you determine that there have been approximately 12,400 zone file numbers?
Thanks for your help!!!
Lyle
Lyle, I download the zone files, remove the duplicates and test registrations, and that’s how many domains (appx) are left.
thanks for the info Andrew, great contribution.
We got Webhosting.Guru 🙂
They’re a rocket, man!

Wednesday I received my first unsolicited email from a registrar inviting me to buy a .SINGLES domain that (supposedly) corresponds to my .COM. Spanish speakers will find this one comical:
TraductoresIngles.com … so why not Traductore.Singles?
Predictable enough, and it doesn’t really bother me. Good luck to them! Still, it’s interesting to see a well known registrar taking this aggressive approach so early. Large domain portfolio holders get emails like this daily, but usually not from registrars.
Given the massive amount of name overlaps being introduced, the volume of such emails will probably increase markedly during 2014. Give it a week or two, and then emails from registrars (and presumably registries) will be joined by waves of redundant front-running from domainers.
I will be working on a website. Not sure what I want to do with it yet. I’ve already gotten offer from colleges and Job boards .
