New registrar offering below-cost pricing in promotion.
I don’t usually write about domain name registrars offering discounts, but this one seemed like it was worth passing on.
NameBright.com – the domainer-created domain name registrar that I wrote about last month – is offering a promotion to get the word out about its offerings.
The company is offering $4.99 .com registrations throughout November. If you have a funded account it’s only $4.58.
What makes this offer particularly unique is that it’s not limited to one per customer, nor does it require an additional purchase. It’s essentially unlimited for new registrations; The company put a 100,000 domain name cap on the promotion.
If 100,000 domains are registered at the discounted price, that would mean NameBright eats about $350,000 in losses compared to the wholesale cost it has to pay for domain names.
When they stop taking all the decent domain names on the drop I may consider using them. As of now I feel like I would be competing with them and have no chances at all against them. They are using their 50 plus registrars to snap all the good drops leaving nothing for their registrar customers.
They want all the domains on their registar, so when you forget to renew them, they will keep them for themselves, lol, this is the new way to get even more drops.
I second James, I would never support NameBright, and urge all others to turn the other cheek as well.
Robbie and James… That is not the goal at all. Give us a little time, we are working on solutions that will put domainers first. (meaning putting you before us!) We are working on one piece of the puzzle at a time. I wish everything was ready today, but there is a lot more in the works!
Andrew – It would probably of made more sense to put “us” before “you” prior to promoting your registrar to domainers. You can been putting yourself first for the past 5 years grabbing 2,000 domains each day from the drop.
Tough crowd for a Friday…
Andrew A – not really – we have been following this company for many years as we lose domains to them each and every day. I know I am not alone. Anyone who chases drops is missing them due to Namebright and their vacuum cleaner antics. Now they are trying to “embrace” domainers and have them use their registrar service? I will not be customer as a result of this.
Guys ,focus on business. They are cheaper.
Why are you envious?because they were faster? You and i had the same chance.I follow them since they had 33,000 names.
You know, they are not picking up all the names.
I bought 104 names just now.
Thanks for the tip Andrew DNW
Let’s call it an honest crowd, nothing tough about how Namebright and Reyberry are perceived in the domainjng community, unless the guy lives in a bubble at his PO BOX in CO.
You have done nothing good for domaining, or domainers, now you going to lure domains over, seize expired domains for your own, good time to be a registar with new gtld contracts out there, but you need traction, and traffic to get the better margin deals.
Andrew might be a good idea to explain what it is exactly that you are doing to show a better image of your company in the community? We are listening…
Robbie – I see we can’t win you over today. By the way, we don’t use a PO Box. If you were at TRAFFIC last week you would have learned where our company is going. I’ll leave it to the people that were down in Ft Lauderdale to tell you more.
For those who are interested in what we have to offer, wait to see what we have in the works and are planning by the end of the year.
Rich – thanks for the business! Glad DNW was able to connect us!
Well I guess you can get your Traffic buddies to push all their domains over to you then.
Hey All Domainers,
I have been screwing you over for years, now I need your support, lemmings form a line to the left, does that sum it up Andrew, no you are not going to win anyone over with, Wait for the magic show, or little boy do you want some candy type lines…
Screwing people over by being a better competitor? Anyone can go out and get these expired domains.
Andrew A – Not really, unless you have about 50k per month to give to ICANN plus server expense, insurance etc.. That is about what it takes to keep 50 registrars up and running.
Prior to Namebright the small time domainer was able to pick up the sub par domains during the drop. As Namebright increased their registrars and their inventory they took this all away from the drop guys running their api’s and
hand registrations. This also decreased the average selling price for aftermarket domains by them pricing their inventory with a BIN in
low $x,xxx range.
James has been consistently correct, manipulating the system to create a monopoly, and buying up all drop inventory, and then trying to unload it quick to keep paying renewal costs, basically dropping domains prices for all.
So Mr.Reyberry, you have very few friends in this industry who have any interest in what you have to say, giving domainers 25 cents off on a domain purchase will not help you get any friends. I doubt anyone at traffic really cared what you had to sell, as you have cost each, and every single one of them money to some degree.
You lived up to your reputation, being nice up until you know there is no chance of gaining the person’s business, then you turn.
Personally who wants to run a domain search on your registar, 5 minutes later the domain could most likely be taken, your tactics have proven not to be domainer friendly in the registration space in the past. I have no clue what backing your name behind anything means, anytime I have heard your name, it has usually begun, or been followed with a very bad word. Seriously, I think you live in a bubble.
I have heard nothing of what your registar brings to the table, you are sidestepping questions, and not giving any facts,
Epik, Godaddy, Name, Namecheap all have cheap reg’s.
I can get a godaddy coupon for 99 cents and reg a domain, NameBright is not an essential service, nor is it needed, nor should anyone care.
Good on James for standing up.
Sorry you feel burned. It is clear you are not open to change. Even though it is for the best…
Please give me of step-by-step instructions of what exactly you want and what is ideal for you? We are considering multiple ways of doing this and your input would be amazing at this point;
I don’t think Jeff and Andrew have done anything wrong. I think they just did a better job than anybody else and either you adapt and do a better job than them or you just pout like some people on here are doing. Grow a set and accept the fact that they have done a good job, whether you like it or not.
Andrew – Just like I mentioned at Traffic, I think you and your team have done a good job.
I thought I would never use NameBright but I reg’d 10 domains last night just to see how easy or difficult to use his system.
It was cheaper to reg. the domains with NameBright than in my own private registrars. 🙂
Reberry is not the enemy. He is just a tough competitor to the average domainer. There are many tough competitors (presently and in the past) like Schilling, NameMedia, Michael Mann, Oversee, Kevin Ham, Enom, etc, etc.
Reberry is not doing anything illegal or unethical like some in the past. (ie, Registerfly, Snapnames, Godaddy, and others). So, please be a little more civil.
The domain category is somewhat like being an athlete. Some are smarter, more natural ability, train harder than others, driven/motivated or lucky. Some eventually take it to the next level like Frank and Monte. Some peak and then sellout (Yun Ye) or just disappear.
My suggestion – seize the opportunity and take his discounted reg. Think of it as putting more money in your pocket. Or, making him lose money on every domain you reg. 🙂
Real simple Andrew R, stop vacuuming up all the top drops. Pick a side, either support the domain community or stop promoting your registrar service. I know you said it is part of the big plan, if that is the case I see very little support coming from domainers until that happens.
Most domainers are capitalists. I guess some aren’t.
James is right again, you need to exit the drop catch business, if you want the trust of domainers. I assume this is not something you are willing to do. As well you need to stop registering TM terms, maybe a better eyeball of your vaccum system before you go and gulp every drop of the day could help you fix that. I think all parties deserve a fair shot, and people should not be swayed by teaser pricing. I would rather register with Godaddy.com, Name.com, Namecheap.com before even considering NameBright.com. Everyone is allowed to do as they please, and think for themselves.
Well now with $8M in renewals, NameBright needs the help of domainers to launch a new business, every person that they have cost money, and bringing the average price of a domain down in the past few years, with your fixed priced, just under the cost of a UDRP model, don’t think people don’t notice. The retail customers with 1 domain accounts, will eat you whole in servicing their needs in customer service. Everyone, and their dog wants to start a registar now,
Face it guys, the drop catching business is evolving, the drop catching guys are building up inventory, as they cannot turn it over quick enough. They need other traffic sources drive traffic, and get eyeballs on their names.
So Let’s open up a registar, the retail customers are to much work, Every registar offers it’s best customers in the $8.xx price range, so no big deal here.
When you are carrying close to 1 million domain names, you need traffic, to get eyeballs. So when someone goes to the registar and types in I want to purchase ComputerDell.com, and it shows it is taken, the registar will say well you can purchase ServiceDell.com for $1,695, AND THIS IS WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO MOVE BACKLOGGED INVENTORY!
As well having access to the non renewed domains of inventory that get’s transferred over, I doubt NameBright will be very generous in regards to redemption schedules, and you will all see this soon enough.
Oh by the way the above domains were all seized by DELL COMPUTERS in UDRP from HugeDomains, which is related to NameBright.
Maybe not a good idea to trounce on the TM of DELL, pretty well known company.

Sometimes all the little dogs can do is bark at the big dog that takes all the food.
Sometimes the barking works, but not often.
But it would be wrong to accuse the little dogs of being anti-capitalist. Their “capital” is their barking.
yawn. you are becoming very boring. I just helped someone register more than 350 domains with us – for way cheaper than he would have gotten those domains anywhere else. He was ecstatic about the price. If you don’t like our pricing I suggest you go somewhere else. You can whine all day, but that does not change the direction are company is growing.
Andrew,
I agree, very boring, just ignore them.
I don’t comment on many blogs, but seeing James and Robbie’s comments are a joke. Why don’t you tell McDonald’s to stop selling hamburgers cause Billy Bob’s Hamburger joint can’t sell as many hamburgers these days.
Plenty of ways to compete with Reberry on the drop, just gonna cost you more money.
Andrew, pleasure meeting you at TRAFFIC, and hopefully we can work on some things in the near future.
I have nothing against reberry or what he does but at the end of the day, if you work the drops using namenbright is like buying from the competition.
Robbie is right about Namebright registering trademark domains! I only looked at what they did the past couple of days! This is not what I would expect from them… I am sure the minute they see this they will send the delete command however it does not minimize their practices. This behavior put their registrar at risk not only for litigation but possible troubles with ICANN. Not where I would want to keep my domain portfolio…

Andrew R – I see you deleted the domains I noted above, smart move… here is another batch. Why do register these infringing domains and list them for thousands on you site?

I guess a “complaint” of James and Robbie is that if you don’t renew a domain name at NameBright, Reberry et al will eventually register that domain name for themselves?
Not picking sides here (and sorry if that disappoints anyone) because I’m not a domainer, but I’m just wondering as part of my interest in this thing.
Dave, if you have a domain with us and you let it expire, we decide to pick it up, you will be able to retrieve the domain for 365 days from the expiration date, at the regular renewal cost. For .com that renewal price is $8.03. This should not be a concern to domainers. Or any domain owner. We want to take care of the customer, and to do anything otherwise in this case would create issues.
Dave, I believe that is their primary complaint with Reberry.
I suggest Robbie and James use other registrars if that is their concern. May I suggest they use Godaddy, Enom, Network Solutions. Register, Moniker, Dynadot, Fabulous, where the registrar does not take over expired domains.
“May I suggest they use Godaddy, Enom, Network Solutions. Register, Moniker, Dynadot, Fabulous, where the registrar does not take over expired domains.”
That’s funny. I don’t know about all of them, but several on this list do take over expired domains. It’s pretty much the norm these days.
Andrew A – what are your thoughts on all of the trademark infringing domains that are owned and being sold by Namebright? Here are more that were just registered yesterday, seems to be a daily thing.
AvonPolice.com
InfinitiConcepts.com
KelloggClub.com
SprintNow.com
You’re asking what I think about people registering trademark infringing domains? Obviously, I don’t like that.
It seems that their systems are missing some keywords. That said, of your most recent list, I don’t think most of them are trademarks. AvonPolice.com clearly has nothing to do with the
MLMmakeup company.
