…and that’s not a top level domain name.
Technology company dotCloud has renamed itself Docker Inc., in a bit of news tangentially related to the domain name industry.
Despite its name, the company has nothing to do with domain names. It created the Docker.io container technology for Linux Apps. Since that’s the crux of its business, it is renaming itself Docker.
Although the name change had to do with a business model change, don’t you think the company’s name would be confused with the forthcoming dot cloud domain names? A big technology company – potentially Amazon or Google – will soon by running .cloud. When that happens, some people visiting Docker’s old website dotCloud.com will not find what they were looking for.
I reached out to the company to ask if .cloud had anything to do with the name change, or was at least viewed as a “bonus” to changing the name. I’ll update this story if I hear back.
Docker had been using the domain name Docker.io for the Docker product. It recently acquired Docker.com.
