Braintree domain names registered.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that PayPal is close to a deal to acquire Braintree Payments. Braintree handles payments for OpenTable, Uber Technologies and Airbnb, among others.
If you need more proof that something is in the works, look no further than a flurry of recent domain name registrations.
A handful of defensive domain name registrations have been undertaken at domain name registrar MarkMonitor, including:
braintreepaymentssucks.com
braintreepaymentssucks.net
braintreesucks.com
braintreesucks.net
Some country code domain names were also registered:
braintreepayments.at
braintreepayments.jp
braintreepayments.tw
But Braintree’s domain name registrar is Network Solutions, not MarkMonitor.
PayPal, on the other hand, uses MarkMonitor.
buying BrainTree Payments would be a great decision for PayPal, btw “BrainTree.info” is for sale on DNS.
So, if I’m planning to buy a company, then it’s ok to squat their trademarks? Let’s hope the deal doesn’t go sour.
You were right, Andrew. Paypal bought Braintree for $800m today. http://techcrunch.com/2013/09/26/paypal-acquires-payments-gateway-braintree-for-800m-in-cash/
PayPal should buy LendingTree too (Ticker: TREE) Impeccable reporting, as always, Andrew.
