It’s a lucky number, but is it this lucky?
[Update: my skepticism was warranted. The bid has been cancelled.] The domain name 8888.com has received a 400,000 EUR bid at Sedo. That’s over $500,000 USD.
8 is consider a lucky number in Chinese culture. Lucky enough for a four digit domain to be worth over $500,000?
I’m perhaps a little skeptical. But I’ll point out the bidding requirements to bid over 100,000 EUR at Sedo:
1. Complete the application form included in the email, sign it and fax the document back to Sedo along with a copy a government issued photo ID and a bank statement or utility bill from within the previous 60 days.
2. Review the payment instructions on the invoice and wire the fully refundable USD 1,000.00 security deposit.
It’s not like you can just register for an account at Sedo and make a 400,000 EUR offer.
I’ll keep an eye on this one.

Remember a couple of years back some guy was picking up 2 and 3 number domains for big money. Forwarded to cryptic landing pages promising that some code or other would be revealed. Wonder if this is related?

Wow! Proves yet again that most of the world doesn’t have a clue about China. 888.com was sold for a million plus to a gambling house. Fa fa fa

Until the auction hasn’t finished and the domain paid for, it could very well be a non-paying troll.

There are other countries, especially in the Asia pacific region who consider other numbers are lucky. 9 is considered lucky in Thailand, for example.
As for this domain, I don’t see any reason why it’s not legit. The rich Chinese, are very rich indeed.

4444 is the unlucky number for chinese……it’s a sign for bad fortunes…..and representing “death”……
