A mammoth ccTLD sale.
Yesterday Sedo domain broker Dave Evanson announced that he had brokered the sale of webhosting.co.uk for $500,000.
The buyer, Pawel Ciszewski, doesn’t appear to be new to the webhosting comparison site business. His LinkedIn profile links to a similar site FindMyHosting.com.
So Cisznewski knows what he’s doing; he knows what the traffic to the domain and the keyword domain can do.
I have two thoughts on this sale.
First, congrats to Dave Evanson on the huge sale. $500,000 is a big deal in any top level domain. I actually referred someone to Evanson recently who was trying to sell a hosting related domain. I thought it was a long shot, but Evanson turned it into a sale within a few weeks. He definitely has good connections in the hosting business.
Second, the timing of this sale of a .co.uk domain is surprising. With .uk registry Nominet hoping to open up second level domains such as webhosting.uk, I assumed that the market for good .co.uk domains would be somewhat stunted due to the uncertainty.
Bad timing indeed, as by my interpretation the proposed changes will give the new registrant little chance of securing .uk version.
In these days most web hosting companies are offered cheap, more features, free domain, etc.
