Cognac.com changes hands again in $140,000 sale.
Dallas company Weblabcenter has sold Cognac.com for $140,000, Domain Name Wire has learned.
Weblabcenter bought the domain name in a Sedo GreatDomains auction in 2008 for $88,000. That’s nearly a 60% return in about four years.
Nhatvi Nguyen of Weblabcenter told me that the company started a blog on the domain name after buying it, but it never amounted to much.
The buyer of the domain name is anonymous for now. The whois record is now protected by Moniker’s privacy service.
The domain was originally registered in 1997.
This sale will be good news to owners of other liquor related domain names.

To me it seems to be not such good deal for seller, even ROI is nice, but I would expect higher price tag…

I’ve got well over 200 liquor domains and they can make decent money when developed, but to make a lot of money requires an extraordinary amount of work and resources.
Cognac.com is a great name, but it will take some pretty hard work to get it earning that pricetag back.
There doesn’t seem to be a heap of demand on the aftermarket (apart from absolute category killers like Cognac.com) – and most sellers overprice their liquor domains by a long way. I’ve approached sellers in the past that could have made some good coin but they got greedy.
Have a browse through Sedo and check out the prices, $8,199 USD for bourbonwhiskey.net is a prime example. This was at auction a while ago and I was close to the reserve but didn’t feel it was worth more than where my bid was (I was the only bidder) in the $XXX range. Now it’s listed (by the same seller) for high $XXXX – if they ever sell at $8k+ then all due credit to them, but I think it’s a real stretch. I own bourbonwhiskey.org and bourbonwhiskeys.com and I certainly don’t think they’re worth $8k.

Given what Vodka.com and others booze domains have sold for this is a cheap price.
Site is down for now. Be interesting to see what develops

I don’t think you can compare it to Vodka.com. That was a one off case.
Also keep in mind the domain sold for $88k in a public auction four years ago, so going up 60% since then is pretty good.

140.000 dollar just a domain is a lot of money. You need some investement to develop something.
Cognac is a complicated business and if you’re not from the region you may find it complicated to make business.
Dominio says
Too cheap, but don’t blame the seller if the money met his needs at the time.
Cognac.com says
We bought Cognac.com for a future business we will develop. As we have several other commerce projects in the works (our 4th & 5th businesses) the site will develop into a blog until we have the time to focus on our larger plan. That will be 18 months to 2 years from now.
If you wish to reach out to us @Cognac on Twitter is the best method at the moment.
In the meantime, enjoy a glass of Cognac and wait.
