iPad3.com will still get a lot of traffic, but Apple just threw out that naming convention.
Apple was supposed to announce the iPad 3 today.
But it didn’t.
Instead, it launched the “new iPad”. No number after it. No other designation, like iPad HD.
What people will end up calling it is still up in the air, but the value of the domain iPad3.com just went down.
So did the other iPad#.com domain names.
One year ago today I wrote about how squatters had picked up just about every iPad domain name from iPad2.com to iPad25.com. Although some of those were very speculative, (seriously, Apple would name something version 25?), Apple has basically junked that whole naming convention.
Jamie Zoch says
It shows how much more valuable iPad.com is!
Apple does call it the “Third-Generation iPad” on the Apple.com/ipad page though.
Andrew Allemann says
@ Jamie Zoch – I figure it will be like the iPod and iPod touch. They didn’t call it the “iPod 3”, instead it was iPod, third generation.

Tim Cook looks to put his signature on the post-Jobs Apple.Good on him to get the “brand number” thing outta the way early.I’m leaning towards getting one.(my first)
Sole Designer says
I think most consumers these days are use to the brand number. It gives the feel of improvement over the last version. The sale numbers might decline on this version but only time will tell.
Companies should really think ahead in terms of domains. Domains are pretty important in a marketing strategy these days.
Domainer Extraordinaire says
ipad3.com still has a lot of value just like superwalmart.com has a lot of value. Walmart calls their larger stores Walmart Super Centers but their customers call them Super Walmarts.
ipad3.com typins will be strong regardless.

@ jorge – thanks

ipadhd.com would still be very valuable since thousands of apps use the HD moniker to differentiate their ipod/iphone version and iPad version of apps.
Val U Able says
Yep iPad and Walmart inclusive domain names are still good
