Four old names and a new one on this year’s list.
Which company is most innovative when it comes to selling domains in the aftermarket?
1,152 people shared their thoughts on this question in Domain Name Wire’s annual survey.
In first place is Sedo, capturing 37% of the vote.
Next up is GoDaddy at 27%. The company has steadily marched up the charts in this category as more and more domainers find ways to both buy and sell on its auction platform.
A new entrant into the list this year is DomainNameSales.com, which is interconnected with Frank Schilling’s InternetTraffic.com parking platform. It snagged 8% of the vote.
In fourth place is NameMedia with 6%. Rounding out the top 5 is the Domaining.com network.
The overall “best” online domain sales venue according to survey takers is Sedo.
I can think of a lot of reasons these companies can be described as innovative. Perhaps next year I’ll ask why when people answer this question in the survey.

could this survey have been in some way skewed?

I’d love to hear your thoughts about this.

@ Adam –
I think both Afternic and Sedo have been innovative with their distributed listings agreements.
GoDaddy has been the registration path, as well as some of the features on its auction platform (data is shares).
Domaining.com for integration valuations and stats.
DomainNameSales for design, data it shares, traffic ranking algorithm, messaging, etc.

If you are using the term INNOVATIVE, I do not believe sedo belongs there for 2011…
Mike says
Well, there is a reason why Afternic isnt at the top of the list: its online system so riddled with bugs that they refuse to correct.
Andrew Allemann says
@ Mike – what are some of the bugs on Afternic?

Next year you may also want to ask two questions…
1) Which company is most innovative when it comes to selling domains to other domainers?
2) Which company is most innovative when it comes to selling domains to end-users?
The rankings would be much different for each audience — at least in my opinion.
