People try to make a quick buck off Steve Jobs’ death.
When news happens, domains get registered.
People registered 1,517 domain names related to Osama bin Laden being killed in the 15 hours after news of his death broke — at GoDaddy alone.
Over a hundred hurricane domain names were registered in the wake of Hurricane Irene.
And now comes Steve Jobs and the (mostly) tasteless registrations of 600 related domain names in the 36 hours after news of his death broke. That’s the number just at Go Daddy. For comparison, only 14 Steve Jobs domains were registered at GoDaddy in all of September.
As with domains registered in the wake of previous news events, a lot of these registrants are trying to cash in on someone else’s misfortune.
Right now on eBay you can buy InMemoryofSteveJobs.com for $10 million.
Perhaps the most telling eBay listing is for AppleFounderSteveJobs.Com. The seller says he feels bad about Jobs’ death, but apparently not bad enough to make a quick buck off it:
Although some eBayers will think selling this domain name is inappropriate given his recent passing, you need to remember that Steve Jobs reached the level of success he did by being an entrepreneur with an incrededible vision and an unyeilding passion for success. I have incredible respect for his accomplishments and, in a personal way, mourn the loss of his death even though I did not know Steve Jobs…

Please correct it.

Thanks Joe

It’s not GoDaddy that registered it. Customers from GD are registering it.

I don’t think anyone is going to make a buck, quick or otherwise, on these domains. They’ll eventually end up in the domain Hall of Shame along with all those other Michael Jackson and Anna Nicole Smith bottom feeder registrations. Hope they take a bath on them.
Joe says
Interestingly, InMemoryofSteveJobs.com was registered the day after Michael Jackson’s demise.

Who the hell would want them??? What would you do with them in say a month??

And your just as bad because you wrote a blog about Steve Jobs with the intention of having viewers go to your blog and click on paid ads! Sounds like your making a buck too or maybe your just mad because you didn’t get the good names first..hmmmm
People that say it’s disrespectful to Steve to purchase Steve Jobs domains are full of it. Most are bought by Steve Jobs fans with the intention of selling the domains to someone who is going to make the domain into a lasting memory for Steve. If anything, its a huge compliment to have so many people buy your domain name and so what if someone makes a buck! Good for them!
Andrew Allemann says
So Jules, which Steve Jobs domains did you register?
Mansour says
Andrew I registered the domain name:
iSteveJobs.com in 1-2007 what will be a good use for it.

I remember when the ‘the king’ registered all those domains related to BP’s oil spill in the gulf and nobody said a word.

Shame on you Andrew. 🙂

None..I’m just tired of reading and hearing about it! It just sounds like unneeded drama to me and by writing about it you are doing the same thing you are criticizing others for…
I mean where is the line drawn? Should we blame the big hosting companies for selling the domains? The media for putting it all over the news? The list goes on and on…
