Big Stadium gets a .Co brand.
When the .co registry announced last week that it had broken through the one million domains registered barrier, Overstock.com (NASDAQ: OSTK) said it had another big .co related announcement on tap for today.
And here it is: the company will name the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum (where the Oakland Raiders and Oakland Athletics play) the O.co Coliseum.
The company bought six year naming rights in April. Big props to Elliot Silver for being the first (I believe) to suggest that these naming rights could involve .co.
While the press release announcing the O.co naming still refers to O.co as merely a shortcut, it appears to be much more than that. In an AdAge article, company executives say they are gradually changing the name of the company to O.co. They liken the process to Kentucky Fried Chicken changing to KFC. The company also points out that O.co is great for international business because Overstock is sometimes hard to translate.
Another big win for the .Co marketing team.

Looks like .co may be gaining some momentum.

Now they have no brand.
How will they protect “O” from being used in commerce?
Now someone has to say have you visited “O”. What the hell is that?
Oh, and by the way don’t type a “M” on the end of .co or it won’t resolve.
Just plain stupid by Overstock, excuse me, I meant O.com, oops, I meant o.co.
What dummies.

This change is good for the US .co market. but nothing is done so far to bring .co outside US (asia where i live).

How good is this. Just the start… Now watch amazon get into mix and you know who is after that 🙂

Good move – O.CO will grab more market share after this switch.

Of course .CO has hit a million, it does not surprise me in the slightest.
It has so much going for it.
The only negative is the time it will take to get it on the publics lips.
5 years time we will see a very different landscape.
I’d laugh so hard if it pushed down the value of .COM (which it could possibly do).
Good thing, greedy domainers need to learn a hard lesson. Trying to sell a one work .com for 100K+. Suck my balls, they’re not enent worth 10% of that price.

Hell they can train a monkey to play an instrument. A hum can be taught that the m does not go in.
I love typing in co, so much easier than com

The “O.co” sign at the entrance could also be interpreted as “Oakland Coliseum” 🙂
