Domain broker announces record year for domain name sales.
Sedo announced today that it helped sell over $100 million worth of domain names last year. It’s the first time the company has hit 9 figures in a year.
The total was no doubt helped by the $13 million sale of Sex.com. Without the Sex.com sale Sedo’s numbers would actually be down compared to 2009 as 2010 numbers are up $2.5 million from the prior year.
.De continues to be Sedo’s most sold country code domain name followed by .eu and .co.uk. In Q4 .de accounted for almost half of the company’s ccTLD sales, but it’s share of the market is down compared to 2009.
As of the end of 2010 Sedo had more than 18 million domain names on its platform.
More recently, this week the company reported the sale of TS.com for $186,000 and Inheritance.com for $65,000.
Just aminterestimg thought and a quick calculation.
18M domains on the platform throughout the year (we will say that number is pretty stable as some come an go)
$100M per year generated in sales
So each domain on the platform is worth essentially $5.50 to Sedo. Not bad, close to .com reg fee. Too bad they are not all .com, yet some may be .info which costs a lot less.
In summary, for every domain added to Sedo they make another $5.50 (all things being equal).
@ JP – except they only get about 10% of that. Still, $.55 isn’t bad.
Of course, that doesn’t include parking where Sedo makes most of its money.
@Andrew
Both points Dually noted.
I think the expected vale per domain (parking aside) is a pretty good barometer of how good a particular sales venue is at selling the domains they have listed there. I’m curious what this number is for Afternic. If at Afternic each domain repressors $8 then that tells me that domains at Afternic have a higher expected sale price. Who knows the reason, could be the tlds that are accepted at the venue or one is more picky than the other, but a useful study to do.
@ JP – would also be interesting on a tld-by-tld basis to see which service does best in particular tlds/cctlds.
