Listing level and commission changes at domain marketplace.
Afternic has revamped its web site and made changes to listing options and commissions.
Afternic previously had three listing options, one of which merely listed domains on Afternic. Now there will be two options: Afternic DLS Network and Afternic DSL Premium.
DLS Network gets your domains listed on 20 domain reseller sites, reaching 25 million prospective buyers monthly. DLS Premium gets you two more resellers, but they’re big ones: Network Solutions and Register.com. Premium also enables “instant transfer” for sales, and domains must be priced and registered at one of the Premium registrars. Afternic says the average selling price on Premium is 33% higher than DLS Network.
The basic listing level at Afternic will be grandfathered for existing domains until the end of the year.
Commissions for DLS Network are 15%, with 5% back if your domain is parked with Afternic/SmartName (so net 10%). DLS Premium commissions are 20% with the same 5% back option for parking, making it only 15% for parked domains. Minimum sales commissions are $120. The median sales price at Afternic historically has been about $1,200, so the minimum commission will rarely apply.
Leonard Britt says
I rarely sell a domain at Afternic but I had not been notified. If your domain is parked at SEDO and you don’t choose Premium listings I suppose the commission is 15%? That would be less than the 20% Expanded Promotion with the catch that now the mimimum commission is $120… Basic listings used to have a minimum commission of $60… I suspect I’ll be dropping a portion of my listings…
Domain's Price World Record says
I have 11 domains listed for auction at AfternicDLS and I’ve found the site simple and clear to use, also, it doesn’t put any limit on domains’ pricing
Leonard Britt says
I received their email but it showed up in the spam folder…
A. Mitchell says
Every few days Afternic is kind enough to send an email, mostly prompted by a decision to revise a maximum allowable price. Under their old system, ignoring an email could lead to Afternic bumping a domain with a cram-down cap into the ‘basic’ listing category. Without that basic category option, I wonder what will happen.
The poor communication practices of Afternic don’t enable sellers to find out information that is most important. The emails usually say that there is an important message awaiting on the Afternic site, but do not reference the domain that is the subject of the email. They are training sellers to ignore emails. Just like GoDaddy is training people to click on links and images within emails.

i believe sedo and afternic should get a 60% commission on every sale becase they work so hard.
Greg says
hahahaha todaro that is really funny.

Based on the following paragraph in the email, it sounds like Premium will unfortunately still be limited to Netsol+Register. But anyone have a guess who the “exciting new partnerships” are? Or what simplified listings means?
“The DLS includes top registrars and reaches up to 35 million prospective buyers monthly through a network of 20+ world-class partners. In coming weeks DLS Premium promotion will announce exciting new partnerships that will substantially increase the number of potential buyers reached, and will simplify listing for domain owners.”

I congratulate NameMedia for continuously
trying new techniques.
Professional sales people know it is easier
to do MORE business with your present
customers than to establish new customers.
I believe that is what NameMedia is attempting
here.
The question is –
Can Smartnames produce more revenue per domain
than the other guys?
(Trafficz, DomainSponsor, NameDrive, Parked, WhyPark, Epik)
Is NameMedia attempting to get more domains
in its database to attract prospective
buyers so they can switch them towards
NameMedia domains?
(This is the same question raised over and over
by the domainer community.
I rarely hear that a major domainer sold
his/her premium domain through AfternicDLS.
But, I often hear that Sedo sold a quality
domain for a domainer at a premium price. )
A couple years ago a disgruntled domainer referred
to the Afternic/NameMedia ppc program as a
‘tape worm’.
They starve the host while thriving on the
host’s daily nourishment.
I rebutted the comment but the image stuck
with me.
Hopefully, NameMedia will address these
questions with SOLID facts at Traffic-Miami.

I’m fielding a few offers on Afternic right now, and I find their system a bit “clunky” and much more confusing than Sedo. I’m just used to one more than the other, and I don’t like how Afternic makes you set like 4 different prices for the name (Floor Pricing, Buy it Now, etc.). It kind of defeats the purpose of “Make Offer.”
I’m fine with the new terms, and I’m glad they’re offering a discount on commission for parking with them.
M. Menius says
Netsol and Register have high renewal fees, right? If they are wanting to take a share of aftermarket sales, then their renewal pricing for domainers should be in line with GoDaddy.
DLS premium commissions are 20%. So don’t gouge the registrant. Simple.

OK guys, I have your answer to the premium partners question:

This is a big deal
