.Co landrush proves significant interest in securing .co domains.
The .Co landrush application period has closed, and the domain name registry has received 27,905 applications during the period. That brings the total applications received to date (including sunrise) to 39,000.
2,523 domain names received more than one landrush application, which means they’ll be auctioned off on Pool. 70 domain names had 10 or more applicants. 451 applicants submitted more than 10 applications each, and applications came from 133 countries.
Although each registrar had different pricing for landrush, the total paid to date for applications and registration is well over $10 million.
The next phase will be general availability on July 20. You can pre-register domains for general availability at a number of registrars, starting at about $25.
Joe says
Great numbers indeed! Thanks for the useful post!
PS: you need to correct the ‘general availability’ date to July 20.
Andrew Allemann says
Thanks Joe…for some reason my head is stuck in June

There’s money in typos.
DomainersChoice.com says
I am impressed with the number of applications during sunrise. I would have assumed a higher number of landrush applications.
Alan Dunn says
Is 28,000 a lot? I like what juan is doing with the marketing but this seems like mostly domainer buys as its a pretty small number – and I would guess at the first renewal date you will see a pretty high non renewal rate here since almost none will have any traffic
I think its great they can raise lots of money here but long tern it will take a lot bigger number to give this extension legs to run on
Anthony Mitchell says
There would have been more landrush action if so many premium domains had not been locked up by a few parties in the two months before the current commercialization process began. This lets the air out of the tires — just at the time when a TLD needs to gain the most global traction.
The people who followed the commercialization process in good faith will find their investments fail to achieve expected ROIs if .co fails to gain a high level of exposure in the next year.
Escalating registration fees could have been employed prior to global commercialization as a drogue to slow down hoarding. Such hoarding will now adversely impact the broader .co registrant community.
The premium ($25) prices for .co domains should have supported a fairer process that delivers better value to domain owners who registered .co domains in good faith.
The major domain registrars, for their part, should learn how to protect their customers’ interests in such processes and not keep quiet about they see.
Domains are not commodities. They are not shovelware or pig food.
Jim Fleming says
It took many years for .COM to attract one million names.
There are less than 2 million 4-letter .COM names because of lack of upper and lower case symbols.
Software such as command completion may help or hurt .CO if .COM is inserted first. There are many other cases where .COM is wired into the software. In the future, .CO may also become wired in. The free markets will drive many of those choices.
.COM enjoys the price caps (real or imagined) of the U.S. government. The $6 came from a $9 upside down on the other side of the negotiating table. Uncle Sam said, “Under $10”, “OK $9”. .COM is inching it’s way toward that magic $10 barrier.
.CO has no barriers. That may turn people away.
If .COM adds a owner Transfer Tax of 10% then people may look at other gTLDs. People do not want surprises once they build a brand.
Brad says
For all the .CO hype, 28,000 does not seem like a very large number to me.
Brad
dropped says
where we can see that names list ?
David says
Do we get a refund if we do not win an auction?
Have all the people with domains that went to auction been notified?
Andrew Allemann says
At the end of the day each stage is a series of tests. Is 28k for landrush at $300+ a pop good? I think so. So the next test is the first day of general registration, July 20. Given all of the publicity large registrars have given .co, including big mentions on their home pages, I think July 20 will go really well. Then the next test is registrations throughout the rest of the first year. Then you have the first annual renewal/drop.
So far it’s looking good. I think $8M+ from landrush is nothing to sneeze at.
Domain Promo Codes says
i have registered one .co also , when will we go auction or the results will be clear?
Mike says
sorry to sound like a broken record as others have already asked does anyone have a link to the list of 2,523 landrush names going to auction?
ST says
I would have assumed with all the media attention the number woulda been higher.
However for a ccTLD it’s not bad at all i guess.
dot XXX has 110k pre registration (according to the registry).
Time will tell 😉
Andrew Allemann says
@ ST – we’ll see how many .co has pre-registered tomorrow afternoon I guess
Em john says
According to domainmonster.com, they have received more pre-orders for .co than any other recent launch. But the marketing for this extension was superb so it doesn’t surprise me.

I would love to see the list that have to go to auction?
I also had applied for two co. domains.
Hopefully mine are not in the 2,523
Anyone know or have a list of the 2K?
Juan says
Hi Alan (…and others):
Thanks for the positive comment about our marketing.
Considering the price point registrars were using for Landrush, we think the numbers are quite an accomplishment.
As I’ve said in other posts, I rather run a registry with 1 million names at $X and not one with 2 million names at $X/2. Getting into the volume game is a slippery slope…
Derek (..and others):
For those of you who have asked about auctions for landrush names, we’ll be sending landrush data to registrars between today and tomorrow. Although this is entirely up to each registrar, expect to be notified (or awarded your domain) by wednesday.
Juan says
Jim,
Regarding your point about price caps: You’re correct, because of the price cap on .COM, the entire DNS is “artificially” priced. Those price caps establish a market price for other TLDs.
If .CO were to do something outside of market prices (such as implementing a tax), we would loose all credibility with our customers and partners. Commercial suicide.
Mike says
I got ousted. about 80% of names i had on general availability pre-order got taken during landrush.
Andrew Allemann says
@ Mike – must have been good names, then 🙂
I’ll look for you here at HostingCon
Mike says
@ Andrew,
I can say with a pretty high degree of certainty that all 50 states went in landrush 🙂
Derek says
I have 3 names landrush premium (to me)
and 1 general preorder 3 letter name.
my host is godaddy.
Collabo says
Where can I find a list of these registered domain names?
And since we’re on the topic, is a list like this available for other extensions as well?
Derek says
@ Mike,
did you get your names yet ?
I am still waiting for godaddy to confirm or move off to auction for mime.
Have any of your received any more info on this
Thanks
David says
Look at whois.co
If you registered through GoDaddy and the registrar is ClickPanda and the address is in Arizona, you have got your domain 🙂
And it’s domain monster if it is in England.
Derek says
so im guessing if the domains are not listed in the whois.co yet they are likely to be going to auction… 🙁
Collabo says
Does anyone even know if google will treat these as TLD’s (globally) or if they will only be as good as other country codes out there and I’ll have to target my urls to columbians?
Roddy says
I put a landrush on android.co and it is still pending application as of today. I called godaddy and they said the resigtar hasn’t released the domain name yet? I did however get a few good .co domains so far, tell me what you think:
payoffdebt.co (7/20/2010)
cosigner.co (7/20/2010)
myrobot.co (7/19/2010)
mobilemedia.co (7/20/2010)
iclone.co (7/19/2010)
HOMEID.CO (7/20/2010)
RADIOAD.CO (7/20/2010)
RODDY.CO (7/20/2010)
TVSPOT.CO (7/20/2010)
& android.co (is Pending Application as of 2/21/10 8:23pm est)
I am with godaddy.com
Collabo says
I think payoffdebt.co has the best chance for you. I’ll give you $10 for Roddy.co right now!
The way the sales are going means good things for those that bought in early.
.CO worldwide domination!!
Roddy says
I own all the domains already. You can see my list on my website. creativemindsmd(dot)com. I am just waiting for android.co to be released. I believe I have it because one other domain I had was already taken (creativeminds.co).Godaddy said I will recieve a refund for that by tomorrow at the latest. $10? Now thats funny! It cost me $26…lol. But i appreciate the offer. Did you get any?
Collabo says
I did actually. Probably more than I should have to be honest with you. I grabbed collabo.co, vanrentals.co, webconsulting.co, teethwhitener.co, and cncmachines.co just to name a few.
I will be releasing and selling my domain names on domainnamesales.co in a week or so.
Trying to make my move into the domainer industry!
😛
Roddy says
Nice!
Me too. just did some research and read that the landrush phase ended 7/16/2010 and the android.co is still showing in my list…I think i struck gold!
.CO Landrush
06/21/2010 – 07/16/2010
Find more information
about the .CO-Launch at
http://www.co-registry.info
You have some good domains. I would sell teethwhitener to Protor and Gamble or Johnson & Johnson. When Android.co becomes available in my account I am going to contact a broker to sell it for like $20,000. You think I could get $20,000k for it?
Derek says
@ Roddy, I still have 3 pending landrush applications open for my domains. did you get android.co? awsome name. I am also with godaddy. Still haven’t heard.
Well done for you.
I still suspect mine will run into auction phase.
Ps I think the value all depends on the how well to co domains do globally. remember .mobi?
some did well and others sank.
Andrew Allemann says
Android.co is a crappy name, if you’re going to use it for what I think you are.
Roddy says
@Andrew- what do you think I will use it for and what would you use it fork?
Andrew Allemann says
@ Roddy – if it’s about the Android operating system, it’s one big trademark problem
Sylvain says
I lost the domain myspace.co in the COauctions.co auction for 20500.00USD with 41 Bid. Can afford that amount…
Sylvain says
At this time i always have myspace.co in my Domain manager at Godaddy and it’s “Pending application” 10 Days after lost it in auction
