.Tel IDN registration goes live.
Just moments ago the .tel domain name began accepting registrations for internationalized domain names. .Tel is now available in Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Danish, Finnish, German, Hungarian, Icelandic, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish.
Of course, users will still need to type in the Latin “.tel” at the end of the domain names. Only the second level domain name will be in non-Latin characters.
According to a tweet by .tel registry Telnic’s Justin Hayward, the first .tel IDN registered today was ärzte.tel, which translates to doctors.tel.
At least 45 registrars that offer .tel domain names are offering IDNs, including EuroDNS and Name.com.
.Tel domain names are not for web sites, but instead allow users to create a sort of business card on the web that includes contact information.
