Trade group asks ICANN not to approve .xxx TLD.
In a letter to ICANN CEO Rod Beckstrom, Diane Duke of the adult industry trade association Free Speech Coalition asks ICANN to reject ICM Registry’s plans for a .xxx top level domain name.
Much of the adult industry opposed .xxx after governments started getting involved. Governments suggested that perhaps they could force all adult web sites to use the .xxx top level domain, moving them away from .com. That would, of course, be detreminental to the online adult entertainment business.
Dukes claims that ICM registry doesn’t have industry support, and so any claim by the registry that it is creating this TLD on behalf of the adult entertainment community is incorrect.
The religious right and porn stars don’t usually agree on something. But this is a case where they do.

Why would then ICANN go forward with gTLDs? It would be hypocritical on their part to promote “business” with the launch of hundreds of gTLDs on behalf of companies that want to enter the domain registration field, all while denying a single venture the same right.

I would LOVE to see .xxx approved. That way, I can decide to filter out porn as I choose to do so, very simply and very effectively.
While all those porn mongers shout freedom of speech, yada, yada, yada, what about my freedom FROM having hard core porn pumped into my email and posted on my forums by idiots who insist on posting porn on my totally unrelated sites?
I say give the porn mongers their own dark corner of the web and just leave those of us who are disgusted with having graphic sex constantly shoved in our faces alone.
And bring on the filters, baby!

@ Ms Domainer – the reality is that adult sites won’t be forced to use .xxx, so it’s not going to accomplish what you want.

@Andrew – Exactly!

There’s probably a fair use angle for the NFL Players Association, too

@ Andrew – Do you know something about NFL players that we don’t?!

@ Jim – oops, that comment was supposed to be on this story
🙂

@Ms Domainer: The creation of a .xxx tld will not allow you to filter out porn sites, because there is no way to prevent people from using a .com, .net, .whatever domain to host porn.
