Auction results are impressive.
With Rick Latona Auctions taking over as exclusive auctioneer at TRAFFIC conferences next year, a lot of people questioned if it would be up to the challenge. Many of those questions were answered this evening in New York.
The final tally appears to be about $1.25 million or so in sales. That’s a respectable number. But it’s what’s behind the numbers that should be applauded.
Exhibit 1: PinkDiamond.com. This domain sold for $18,000, a decent sale. What’s impressive is that the domain sold for just shy of $8,000 at Sedo over the summer. Within a few months, Rick Latona Auctions was able to more than double the buyer’s money.
I wasn’t personally at the auction and wasn’t able to tune in for long online, so I can’t speak to how well it flowed. I caught the first ten minutes and am happy to report that it started basically on time. That may be the first time in domain auction history across all auctioneers that a live auction has started on time.
Here are the top sales from the auction, according to Proxibid:
Rio.com $450,000
Whiskey.com $185,000 (hopefully this will shut up everyone with liquor domains who think their domains should sell for $3 million like Vodka.com did)
SchoolLoans.com $137,500 (includes web site)
iAuction.com $50,000
Porn.co.za $45,000
Boy.com $45,000

the RIO.com price seems too low if we consider that Brazil will hold the 2016 Olympics

@ 100 Domains – there’s a limited number of people with pockets big enough to pick up a $400k domain.

The SchoolLoans.com deal was my favorite.

Doesn’t sound like a bargain to me, much better value in the market.
Mike says
I felt like skidders.com/.net was a good bargain @ $1500
Sumit Bahl says
A lot of these i, e, i- and e- domains have started to pick up lately.

I’m very excited with the PinkDiamond.com sale because I own PinkDiamonds.us
Anyone want to hazard a guess to its value?
I know it a newbie question, but… Thanks
Andrew Allemann says
@ MJ – maybe a couple hundred dollars
Kevin Ohashi says
Generally .net’s go for ~10% of .com price, and .us would probably be ~10% of that, or 1% of .com. Just a quick guesstimate.
Viking says
Who will come out first with a full list of sales on the auction? What percentage of domains sold from all domains up?
Andrew Allemann says
@ viking – DNN.com has one

Got to love the auction business.

I don’t think that these sales were as much ‘impressive’ as they were ‘expected’. RLA knew when they arrived in NY pretty much what to expect. I can speculate that they knew Rio.com would be the anchor sale. Besides a few surprise sales like PinkDiamonds.com, Porn.co.za, and iAuction.com what sales were you impressed by? Across the board prices seemed pretty average to low IMO. However, with a million plus in sales, there’s no doubt that Rick Latona and his company scored big in this auction.

rio.com is also great for the World Cup in 2014

We have spent a small fortune attending TRAFFIC conferences and we do not regret spending the money except for this past time.
I was VERY disappointed on conference aspects relating to the agenda, amount of vendors and the lack of happiness and interest of other veteran attendees. The networking aspect is always worth it’s weight in gold. However, listening to a parking expert continuously hog the floor about development and having ZERO experience in the area is infuriating.
There are a lot of attendees with a vast wealth of information who have the knowledge, credentials and intestinal fortitude for thinking outside the domain box and moving to the future.
I was also very upset that after all this time, the portfolio and experience we have, not ONCE have either Rick S. Or Howard EVER shaken our hands or introduced themselves to us or to a lot of other individuals. Having said that Rick Latona was the professional by having the courtesy and manners to do both.
If the subject material does not change to different individuals with applicable knowledge, vendors given better placement of their booths (don’t put them in the same place where the food is served- it is classless, demeaning and a professional insult), and STOP charging the guest speakers to come…(That is just
rude) we refuse to go back no matter where it is being held.
I am hoping Rick L’s crew will bring some class, professionalism and valuable information to TRAFFIC. I want him to succeed.
Please pardon the typos. Using an iphone in a moving car is like typing with boxing gloves on a roller coaster. I also hope i did not anger too many people as that was not my intent.
