Spanish language domain name tops Sedo’s weekly charts.
It’s an interesting week when Sedo’s top domain name sale is only 25,000 EUR (about $35,000 USD). It’s even more interesting when that domain name is a Spanish language .net. But this past week Moviles.net took the crown at Sedo. “Moviles” means mobile in Spanish, and the domain name appears to have been used as a web site before being purchased. It is now temporarily parked at GoDaddy.
Although we all like to see headline splashing sales, sometimes when there aren’t any it helps us focus on the real gut of the domain name market — sales under $10,000. So here are some observations about this past week’s sales at Sedo:
It’s been an eternity since I’ve noticed a .ws domain name sale. But Sedo sold Casinos.ws for $2,000, a nice price for the Somoa country code domain. .Ws is an example of a failed country code branding.
You never know how much .us domains will sell for – good .us domains will sometimes crack the four figure mark. What’s amazing is seeing a mediocre .us domain name — workboots.us — sell for $2,400. It’s proof that there’s always the right buyer for your names. Oh, and Stat.us sold for $2,000.
enopoly.com sold for $4,000. Perhaps it’s these guys, which have suffered under the use of a .net domain name?
Here are the top overall sales from Sedo:
w4.com 20,000 USD
nib.com 11,100 USD
t0.com 9,999 USD
ontrade.com 8,100 USD
koins.com 7,300 USD
satanism.com 6,000 USD
escortslasvegas.com 5,475 USD
rxi.com 5,100 USD
gaspool.com 5,000 EUR
muziekinstrumenten.nl 13,000 EUR Musical instruments in Dutch
huurwoningen.nl 10,600 EUR Rented in Dutch
fly-24.de 9,000 EUR
chocoladeletters.nl 5,950 EUR Chocolate in Dutch
budapester.eu 5,000 EUR
toutelactu.fr 4,900 EUR
kreditkarte.net 10,000 EUR Credit Card in German
mydiet.net 8,000 USD
scholarships.net 7,500 USD
Good .us domains will sometimes crack the FIVE figure mark.
“… What’s amazing is seeing a mediocre .us domain name — workboots.us — sell for $2,400….”
Mediocre? Hardly.
Workboots is a pure, exactly-descriptive name of a product that millions of people buy every year. Use of that name by an end user will payback that $x,xxx quickly and then continue to bring in the sales revenue for many years to come.
There are tens of thousands of domains like this that are not “mediocre” but little marketing goldmines for businesses that sell those everyday products and services. These terms are usable, easy-to-remember, easy-to-spell, and don’t require any “branding”. The company that secures a name like that precludes ALL of its competitors from another marketing tool.
Domainers need to look at the real world beyond their own experiences and the usual “top” terms like cars, stocks, movies, sex, video, etc.. Many, many, many domains like this one deserve greater domainer focus and should be assigned valuations more in line with their real world application. Get the focus off the “CVCVCCVCCLLLVCCV” domainer trading cards and onto something more businesses can use.
Andrew, I’m amazed at the Spanish.NET sale too! Also haven’t seen too many .ws sales either. Great post, I’m an avid reader.
What should I accept for Faiths.net? I am truly asking. Bc the word is obviously outstanding yet i know its plural and not Faith…but still… thx
