Large domain name registrar to offer AfternicDLS domain names.
People searching for domain names at directNIC will soon have the option of buying an existing domain name through NameMedia. NameMedia, which owns BuyDomains and Afternic, will offer its catalog of domain names to customers. For example, I just searched for “baseball.com” at directNIC and was offered an assortment of baseball domain names for purchase:
Domain owners that want to have their domains offered to directNIC customers should sign up for a seller account at Afternic and select “Expanded Promotion” for their domains. Only names with an asking price will be included. Domain names sold through Expanded Promotion incur a 20% commission.
NameMedia has similar deals with other registrars. For example, it offers domain names through GoDaddy. (Although domains offered based on registration searches at GoDaddy only include NameMedia-owned domains.)
directNIC is a top 20 domain name registrar with about 1 million active domain names.

Why is that?

@ Patrick – I think it has to do with wanting to be assured the transfer will go through automatically. But it’s a shame.
