Florida changes domain name for drivers license site. But it’s still bad.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles changed its domain name this month from hsmv.state.fl.us to flhsmv.gov. OK, so that’s an improvement, but wow that sucks.
According to Electra Bustle, the department’s executive director, “This new address is easier to remember and will help identify the department as a government organization.”
Hmmm. The original address was bad. But how much of an improvement is a six character .gov domain name? It went from really horrible to just horrible. Even stranger, the department owns the domain GoRenew.com for renewing drivers licenses, so someone in the organization knows what they’re doing.
I like to think we do things better in Texas than in Florida. After all, we haven’t messed up our elections in awhile. And our domain name for drivers licenses — TexasOnline.com — beats the socks off of flhsmv.org!
Before you rush out and register flhsmv.com (and you know that you are), the folks at Clicks Cons LTD have beaten you to it, registering it in 2006 through DomainDoorman.

I dunno.
Didn’t Texas produce George W. Bush???

And Electra Bustle (some name) is regged too!
Regged last October but not by Clicks Cons.

… now just look at what you’ve done, Andrew … even the .net and .org have been snapped up … just today.
Is this a great business, or what?
ps Could this be the start of the LLLLLL.com land rush? 😉

@ Patrick – I set myself up for that one about GW, and bet myself how long it would take for someone to comment. Not long, it turns out 🙂
@ Steve M – this was another bet I had with myself (at least for the .org).
That means I’ve won two bets in a row. Unfortunately both were with myself, so I owe myself ten bucks.

Dang hilarious, Andrew! I love your perception of the opportunistic domainer’s mind!
At least they didn’t rush to register a name you coined. (Bah!) Great coverage on this story.
